It is often said that the plots of the Viennese operettas don't matter. Possibly not; it is the life and joy and the exhilarat- ing music that stay with us long after the curtain falls. This is certainly true of "The Gipsy Princess", there is a wealth of intoxicating waltzes and csar- das. The plot contains the oblig- atory elements of love in con- flict with honor, the fairytale complication of mismatched classes. Audiences will not only nated $1,325 to the Community Memorial Hospital's Dia- betes Department. The Order of the Eastern Star raised the money through a raffle. items for the raffle were donated by Elsie Wilbur, Willlam and Flora Bishop, the Past Matrons Club, and Fred Alton. Margaret Jeffrey was in charge of sales and Peter Miles was in charge of special events. Diabetes program gets financial boost Community Memorial Hospi- tal is proud to be able to provide an intensified Diabetes Educa- tion Program to this communi- ty. In 1987 a revised Diabetes Program was set up to meet the growing needs of the communi- ty. The program presently pro- vides educational classes. indi- vidual counselling for the adult with diabetes and ongoing sup- port. There are several types of di- abetes - the Type I diabetic who is the very young diabetic for- merly called the juvenile dia- betic. Canada has approxi- mately 200,000 of these people inour country. The Type II diabetic is more common and was formerly clas- sified as the maturity onset or older more senior diabetic. The Type II diabetic person is being diagnosed at the age of 40. This type of diabetes usual- ly does not require the taking of Insulin but is usually con- trolled by diet and exercise and sometimes pills. Canada has approximately 800,000 of these people in our country. Interest - ingly enough there is another 200,000 people walking around with early symptoms of dia- betes and have not contacted a doctor. This Diabetes Centre also services the Gestational diabet- ic (better known as pregnancy of diabetes). These mothers usually require a diet and must monitor their blood until the birth of their baby and the dia- betes will leave after the birth of the baby. Since reopening in 1987, the Diabetes Centre has had over 400 people through the Dia- betes Program. The program has a registered dietician, Joan Hood and the coordinator is Sandy McCully, Certified Dia- betes Nurse Educator. This program coordinator was the first in Durham Region to take the exams by the Canadian Di- abetes Association and become certified. We are proud of the quality of care being provided to this com- munity and we are more than pleased to have a group like the Blue Ray Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star who have raised considerable funds to help bring you a better program through their donations to the program. Extra funds help to provide ongoing education for the staff and to provide many of the teaching tools needed to make learning easier for the person with diabetes. The Diabetes Program is available to anyone who has di- abetes, however entry into the program must be with a refer- ral from your family doctor be- cause he too is an integral part of the diabetic team Children with Diabetes are serviced through the Charles II Best Program at 901 Simcoe St. Oshawa.
