Second quarter starts were at 165,000 units. Improvement in the third quarter was due to higher starts of both sin- gle-detached and multiple PORT PERRY STAR dwellings, 96,000 units and 80,000 units respec- tively, up from 90,000 and 75,000 units during the April-June period. "Third quarter results continued the trend of gradually rising activity evident since the begin- ning of the year. Higher levels of starts were re- corded in all regions, ex- cept for Quebec which posted a decline following a strong second quarter surge," said Gilles Proulx, Chief Economist of CMHC's Market Analysis Centre. Ontario starts rose to 60,000 from 55,000 units SAAR during the third quarter. The increase mainly reflects a gradual improvement in single- detached starts, while other types of dwelling construction held steady. Housing starts in Que- bec fell to 33,000 units SUCCESS INC.
