The day-long meeting at Thunderbird Golf Course last Thursday was intended to in- clude municipal and regional politicians and administrators in the GTA office's Strategic Ac- tion Plan process. This study will offer recommendations on how the GTA will handle the growth of the area in the next 30 years. "Municipalities have a lead- ership role in both creating and implementing a sound and ef- fective plan," GTA Minister Ruth Grier told the partici- pants. "The combined force of regional and municipal official plans form the integral building GET MORE MOTHER JACKSON'S OPEN KITCHENS LIMITED QUALITY DOESN'T blocks we will use to manage the GTA's future growth over the next 30 years. Your perspective and your contributions are vital and represent a critical part of the total consultation process." The minister urged the groups to take an active part in the consultation process and workshops. But contrary to the minister's comments, many feel the gov- ernment is not paying attention to the comments of the partici- pants. Mayor Hall says the govern- ment is ignoring the communi- ties and is going ahead with its agenda instead. "They're not listening," he said. "They're setting out the agenda and we're having to go along with them." He criticized Mrs. Grier for using words such as "we" and "us", but says it really "all boils where COST YOU MORE 450 gram FAMILY SIZE TOURTIERE MEAT PIES 1 pie [ 325 gram READY TO BAKE 8" PIE SHELLS 2 per PRG: 5545 sua 250 505 $ 1 15 12pkgs............ *1 2.65 MUSHROOM COCKTAIL SAUSAGE 24 per pkg....... § 1 00 12 pkgs.......... Mayor Hall says many con- structive suggestions were made at a GTA meeting in the spring, but says they were not incorporated into the new study which they were given last week. He feels the meeting was a waste of time as it is obvious the governmentis not listening. Mayor Hall was not the onl one who felt the municipal poli- ticians were being left out. Ajax councillor Roger Anderson chastised the minister durin the question and answer perio for the way her government is ignoring their comments and concerns. He told the minister that the Grier happy with progress (From page 1) both concrete terms and suc- ceedingin attitude." Mrs. Grier" been under constant fire since she formed the Interim Waste Authority in 1991 to establish three long- term landfill sites in the GTA. One is slotted for Durham Re- gion. A long list of sites released June 4, identified five sites in the Township of Scugog. A short list will be released at the end of November. Mrs. Grier told reporters af- ter the meeting she was pleased with the way the process has been goin to date, despite the delay in releasing the short list. She said despite the criticism, when all is said and done, the public will be satisfied. "I hope and I believe that when the short list of sites is identified people will recognize the fact that the Interim Waste Authority is doing this in a very open way and by identifying all the possible candidate sites it has made it a much better pro- cess than the old way of politi- cians deciding behind closed doors where a landfill site should be located." Despite her pleasure over the success of the process, she says she has been disappointed by the public's participation. And criticized the public forits disin- terest in the process until it was too late. She says ample opportunity was given to participate but the residents didn't respond until they realized the landfill site could affect them. "I don't know how we could've done it any better. I thought we had done it as well as we possi- bly could," she said. "But I think that's one of my disappoint- ments that people didn't partici- pate at the earliest opportuni- ties." She blamed the public for the delay in releasing the short list of sites. Originally the list was due to be released in Septem- ber, but was pushed back until the end of November. Mrs. Grier says a multitude of late com- ment submissions concerning the criteria forced the delay. the "Yellow only Pages" ™ No substitutions ple ase L Most requested Slice mushrooms, green plus tax & red peppers * | | Se Ca TT EE, TTT Tm ------_---- J Compare ars 20 BIG ng = FOOT 112 CX ~PLUS II GIANT DELUXE 99 Il wm SQUARE BOY Wa dont or corres wih Sepperof, |] UPTO27% MORE PIZZA peppers, bacon. onions I PIZZA VALUE pip ig Kong Biggie digi oy TR, | gy C i a! ) @ Ji Het - - od Lo M0 requested GTA meeting a waste of time says mayor meaning of partnership he was He called on the government interpreting from the govern: to consult the "majority" (the ment was "not 50-50, but more people) instead of the "minori- like 90-10." ty.
