JPN SS ---- ssa --" 4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuésday, October 20, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Post office receiving $65 million Hilstone a needed face-lift The front of the Port Perry Post Office will be a tangle of scaffolding for a period of time as it gets some much needed work. Bob Walker, the post master at the Queen Street office, told the Port Perry Star that the front of the historic building was being cleaned. Cracks in the mortar were also being filled. Mr. Walker could not specu- late how long the project would take, nor did he know the cost. The building 1s owned and maintained by the Department of Pubhic Works. Illegal dumping (From page 1) and reporting it to the town- ship The Township of Scugog has been quite successful in its bat- tle against the dumpers. It re- cently won four convictions in court resulting in three of the parties being given $1,000 fines, while a fourth party was ordered to clean up the area. This party also faces further sentencing. But despite the convictions, Mr. Henshall says there hag been no real trend to indicate that the incidences are decreas- ing. He says the incidences are still prevalent and as long as people are dumping, there will be a problem. Ki ey project for Oshawa downtown is axed By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star After years of bickering, it ap- pears the proposed regional ad- ministration in Oshawais dead. In a letter to the Region of Durham dated October 14, a representative from Hilstone Developments in England in- formed the region that it would not be going ahead with its pro- posal for a $65-miliion office and regional administration building project scheduled for downtown Oshawa. The company's proposal was due October 16, but it informed the region two days before the deadline that it had decided to withdraw from the scheme. "After examination of my re- view report, the board has de- cided that it would not be in our company's best interests to put forward a submission for the de- velopment of a new Administra- tion facility in Oshawa at this time," Alan Brookes, Hilstone Representative said in the let- ter. Mr. Brookes said there were "a number of significant rea- sons" which he said would be forwarded to Regional Chair- man Gary Herremashortly. Plans to build a new regional administration building has been a controversial issue since it was first opposed in 1989. A number of the regional council- lors opposed the proposal be- lieving it was too costly. A 17-15 vote in late June scut- tled plans for the proposal but Oshawa was able to get an ex- tension on the proposal which was due last Friday. "It will end the issue for many years," says Mayor Howard Hall.
