"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 6, 1992 - 11 Local woman wins $137,684 in draw When Judy Nickerson's num- ber came up she felt numb. In fact days after her number came up she says she still feels numb. The Port Perry resident won $137,684.20 -- which was sec- ond prize -- in the September 26 Lotto 649 draw. The grand prize for that draw was more than $17 million. Ms. Nickerson said she was at home watching the draw the night the numbers were chosen. These are numbers she'll never forget; 16, 20, 21, 29, 35,41. Usually a 10-ticket player, Ms. Nickerson told the Port Perry Star she decided to play extra numbers due to the large first prize. In total she pur- chased 29 tickets, with the even- tual winning ticket being a quick-pick from the Port Perry IGA. "I think I'm still numb," Ms. Nickerson said in a telephone interview from the lottery of- fice. Ms. Nickerson, a telephone operator for a local alarm com- pany, says she will continue to work, but has plans for the mon- ey nonetheless, She intends to travel to Nova JUDY NICKERSON Scotia, where she grew up, pay some bills and buy a new car as soon as she can get time off work. "It's not enough to quit on," she said. Although she struck it rich with this winning, Ms. Nicker- son says she will continue to play the tickets. "I'm after the big one," she said. Kinette Club is regrouping here By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star The Port Perry Kinette Club 18 regrouping after a one-year absence. The service organization, which formed locally 20 years ago, decided to disband last year because of a waning member- ship. But three of its members -- Vanessa Taber, Debra Duck, and Charlotte Stephenson have restarted the group. Although the organization only needs three members to re- ceive its charter, the women hope more Scugog Township la- dies will join. "We have to have three mem- bers to hold a charter," Mrs. Ta- ber said, "but we can't do much in the communmty with only three members. We desperately need more members to make 1t work." The women hope the group grows to at least 10 members. In its prime, the local membership stood at about 20. "We need 10 to 12 members to really do some effective work in the community," Mrs. Taber said. Membership 1s open to all Scugog Township women be- tween the agesof 21-45. The club meets once a month, usually on the third Thursday, and breaks during the summer. The Kinette Club is an equal partner with the Kinsmen Club. A former rule stating all Kinette Club members must be the wives of Kingmen Club mem- bers has been abolished. Since itis a service group, the organization's main aim 18 to serve the community. The Kin- ette Club does this through fundraising projects for numer- ous causes including Cystic Ii- brosis, the hospital and school bursanes to name a few. The club also provides fellow- ship and personal development forits members. "The social aspect 18 treated as 1mportant as fundraising," Mrs. Taber's husband, national Kinsmen president Dave Robin- son, said. "There are lots of areas for personal growth," he continued, adding a treasurer will learn ac- counting skills, a secretary will iearn the proper method of re- cording minutes, and the entire membership will learn the pro- tocal of running a meeting. Anyone interested in joining the club or wanting more infor- mation should call Mrs. Taber at 985-2671 or Debra Duck at 985-9836.
