Mr. Winter estimated as much as one-third of the busi- ness in the area was being lost to surrounding communities. Although Mr. Winter's find- ings determined Port Perry could currently accomodate the additional commercial units, there were consequences, how- ever. He said the plaza would ex- haust the supermarket poten- tial within Port Perry for the next 10 years, preventing other Retirement home plans turned down By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Scugog councillors have re- jected plans for a retirement home in Port Perry. In a unanimous decision, council rejected the plans for a large retirement home to be built at the corner of Queen and Ottawa Streets. Plans called for a 42-unit, 29,676 square foot building for seniors. More than 50 residents, most surrounding the proposed prop- erty, attended a public meeting last week to oppose the site. They feared the facility would have an adverse effect on the surrounding community. Jim Griffin, who represented the residents, estimated the val- ue of a $200,000 home could drop by as much 30 per cent. Although council rejected the application, it wanted to send a clear message to the developers that it was the location and not the idea which was being reject- ed. "It's the right idea, but in the wrong location," said Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie. Mr. Griffin said he was pleased the proposal was turned down by council, but added the developers still have the option of appealing to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) and therefore the issue was not yet resolved. og RS 985-8507 ela Qi od-148" 668-2003 Whitby ~~ 139 Water Street & Mobile Service 6 High Street, Port Perry REESEEHEIIuEE ST T---- ORT PERRY auto glass & trim ud, 411 Dundas Street, E. Council was slow to accept the report, rejecting the need for such a large development. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce suggested the project be phased in over time as demand warranted. "What's the sense of having a bunch of empty stores around," shesaid. uo Earl Cuddie, township clerk, said the future of the develop- ment hinges on a land use study currently being conducted. He said once all the information is received council would decide what direction to take. Bill Meek, a consultant from the Michael Stuart Group, told the Port Perry Star he was not surprised by the finding of the report, adding it was just as they had anticipated. Mr. Meek said they would now proceed with zoning appli- cation ammendments. He said they would be aiming for construction to begin in the spring.
