Mayor suggests funding to audit work of IWA landfill site search will not work By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Participant funding will not achieve what it is intended to accomplish, says Scugog Mayor Howard Hall. The Interim Waste Authonity (IWA) recently announced the availability of funds to three technical committees to audit its work in the landfill site search. Approximately $150,000 has been earmarked to the commit- tee in Durham Region. The money will be used to retain in- dependent experts to audit the - actions of the IWA's technical process. But Mayor Hall says the pro- cess will not achieve what it is intended to. accomplish. He says politicians do not'want to be in- volved and should not be in- volved in the selection process at this point. "For me to become involved in the process, it would appear that I'm in support of it and I'm not," he said. Mayor Hall says he will dis- cuss the matter with council and give them the option of join- ing the committee, but believes politicians should not be in- volved. "I don't want it to appear that the municipality supports the method," he said. Mayor Hall says it is not yet the time for the municipality to become involved in the fight against the landfill sites. He be- lieves the time will be after the short list is announced. "Once it becomes time to fight a site then the municipality should get involved in it," he said. The IWA announced a long list of 17 sites in Durham Re- gion as potential locations for a long-term garbage dump on June 4. Five of these locations are in the Township of Scugog. A short list of sites is expected to be announced at the end of this month. D) REGION The OSHAWA and STATIONS will be September 8, 1992.
