EMMERSON and most successful family-operated busi- nesses in Port Perry. The company is cele- brating its 75th anni- versary on September 1, the date which Harold Emmerson purchased what was then called Pearce and Ward Insurance. Mr. Emmerson was born in Caesarea in 1893, and moved to Port Perry at the age of six. He was educated in Port Perry, and first worked for Mcintyre's Dry Goods Store, and later was employed at Howard Stone's Men's Wear. On October 10, 1917, Mr. Emmerson was married to Aileen That same year, he purchased the insurance business of Pearce and Ward, whose name was changed to - McGaw. H.W. Emmerson Insurance 10 years later. The following year he bought the insurance business of John Ford, and later the firm of Adams and Hutchinson. At this time the busi- ness was located on the south side of Queen Street in the building which currently is occupied by Pentland Jewellers. During the 10-year period known as the General Agency System, the firm operated under the name Adams, Hutchinson and Emmerson. It was during this time that approximately 30 agents from Lindsay, Fenelon Falls and other northern centres, sent their applications to the Port Perry office, where policies were prepared and issued.
