The Ontario Provincial Police is on the look out for you. In the wake of recent com- plaints in Port Perry, the OPP have stepped up its patrol of the stretch of Highway 7A through the town. According to Constable Gerry Smith, community services offi- cer in the Whitby detachment, the OPP received a call from a resident complaining about noisy and speeding trucks trav- elling along Highway 7A, through Port Perry. Highway 7A is a provincial road and is therefore the juris- diction of the provincial police. In response to the complaint the OPP brought in a special traffic unit from its Aurora dis- trict headquarters. This four- officer unit is made up of both patrol cars and motorcycles. Working out of Port Perry and patrolling the popular stretch of highway, the unit will be enforc- ing the 50 kilometre per hour speed limit as well as checking for seat belts and the safety of the vehicles. The unit will patrol the area, as well as conduct radar traps from various locations along the highway. Although the complaint was in regards to the trucks in the area, Constable Smith says the unit will be on the look out for all vehicles breaking the laws. "We felt it was time we got a little stricter up there (in Port Perry) and hope we get the mes- sage across. Constable Smith could not es- timate how long the increased patrols would be in the area, but he did say it would be for a num- ber of weeks. The unit will move to another location once they feel this prob- lem is under control. "We will be there until some action is taken on the traffic," Constable Smith said. It appears the program has been successful to date. On Au- gust 18, the first day of the stepped up enforcement, a total of 10 tickets were issued as well as 23 warnings administered. "We're just going to get out there and make our presence felt," Constable Smith said.
