As a member and bartender of Elora Legion Branch since 1978, he first started collecting the aluminum tabs in 1989. He had heard a rumor that 10,000 tabs were worth enough to buy a wheelchair. He had a ready supply of tabs and clients were happy to help empty extra cans. But no one knew who was col- lecting the salvaged tabs. He says the whole story turned out to be a hoax, wasting the time of well-intentioned community groups and individuals. But in- stead of trashing the aluminum as others had when learning of the ruse, he scouted out a scrap metal dealer who would take the pull tabs. Tabs are worth about 25 to 35 cents a pound. It takes about 1,000 tabs per pound. Wheelchairs bought are Can tabs do buy wheelchairs available to anyone who needs one. One was bought recently for a student at McMaster Uni- versity in Hamilton, Ontario. Two more have been donated to the Children's Hospital of East- ern Ontario in Ottawa. A used wheelchair may be bought for $200 to $500, manual model - $1,200. For a new manual mod- el - $5,000, for an electric model - 17 million pull tabs. I do hope this letter to the edi- tor will clear up the story going around - people can receive a wheelchair for aluminum pull tabs. First they are collected; sold, and a wheelchair pur- chased. If you wish to get involved - Elora, Ontario, Legion Branch - check this out at your local le- gion branch. I read about this in July- August 1992 Legion.
