Mosport Speed way roars back into fast-paced action By Nelson Hudes Once again, rained out a week earlier, (Aug. 8), Mosport . International Speedway got back into action with its thrilling brand of stock car racing on Saturday night. (Aug. 15, Coca Cola night). The four weekly classes in- cluding Late Model, Street Stock, Late Model Sportsman, and Thundercars took to the track and thrilled the fans as per usual. This week, however, was special as the fans were Midgets rained out Unfortunately, the weather- man and OASA playdowns can- celled out any league games for the Midget Merchants this week. However, the team has a heavy schedule over the next two weeks in order to finish league play as well as to pre- pare for the All-Ontarios in New Hamburg on Aug. 29 and 30. First place in the Oshawa and District Fastball League is still open, and the Port Midgets must win all four remaining X-Raiders pull their after being" treated to a Ladies Race this night, and it was spectacular. As the ladies took the green flag, there seemed to be no stop- ping Debbie Shepstone of Port erry who just wowed: the fans with her fantastic driving style. The race was one of the best la- dies races held this season as everyone stayed out of trouble, there was no bumping and grid- ing and no crashes. Shepstone took the win in convincing style, followed by Donna Smith of 'Pickering and Joanne Rutledge of Newcastle. games to be guaranteed top spot in the standings. See "The Standings Corner" for the com- plete Oshawa and District League standings. The schedule for the next two weeks is: Aug. 18 - Scarborough Dias vs Port - 8:30 p.m.; Aug. 20 - Port vs Bramalea - 8:30 p.m.; Aug. 24 - Port vs Markham - 8:30 p.m.; Aug. 25 - practice - 8:30 p.m.; Aug. 26 - Aurora vs Port - 8:30 p.m.; Aug. 29, 30 - All Ontarios - New Hamburg; Sept. 4, 5 - Brady Division Playoffs to be held in Port Perry. ball skills together By John Bacon After a shaky season of ups and downs the X-Raider girls pulled their skills together for the season end tournament. a CARDS AND COLLECTING We A: One of the largest crowds Cooperstown has seen turned out for the 1983 induc- tion of BROOKS ROBINSON into the Hall of Fame ... Certainly the most popular of the modern-day Baltimore Orioles, Brooks spent his entire 23- year career there ... He set standards for third basemen, being dubbed "The Human Vacuum Cleaner" for his field- ing excellence ... Brooks holds career marks for most putouts, assists, double plays, and highest ficlding average ... The 1970 World Series is always re- membered for his great plays ... Also a fine hitter, he was MVP in 1964 with a.317 average, 28 homers, 118 RBI ... His cards are all popular and this #45 \_ ~ from 1962 Topps is worth $30 ... ) The first game the X-Raiders had difficulty trying to contain the Halos, giving the Halos their first win of the tourna- ment. The next game the X-Raiders came out strong and confident and won against Greenbank playing back to back games the X-Raiders took on the Bell girls. Both teams played solid and very good ball ending the game in a tie, but due to total runs Bell advanced to the finals. I would like to congratulate and thank the girls of the X- Raider team for a great season, I am proud of the excellent atti- tude and improved skills through this season. [ would also like to thank Paul Newell, assistant coach, who spent many hours of his time practicing, coaching and supporting the girls throughout the season. To the Editor: On behalf of my high school girl's basketball players, we are very grateful for the interest that your paper has had in our team. We travelled to Sharon, Pennsylvania on Aug. 14 for the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament. Our team was di- vided into three teams of three players and, although we won two games out of the nine played in total, most of the games were close and [ was very proud of the girls in that they never quit despite usually play. ing against older and certainly bigger opponents. The " 5 of Ohio and Penn- sylvania, where most of the tournament participants came from, is a hotbed for girls' high school basketball and our players had a chance to play against the very best from those | In Street Stock Division, us Andy Warbutton of Oshawa won two of the four heat races early in the evening but when it came time to do the final, there was no one who could challenge Fred Shepstone of Port Perry as he put on one heck of a show to take the checkered flag, the vic- tory lap and the trophy. There was a lot of crashes, spills and bumpy and grinding in this race and it seemed like it might go on forever, but it did finish. Taking second place was Jim Rossiter of Scarborough and in third was Mike Mole from Port Perry. : In Sportsman Division, there were four different winners in each of the early evening heats, however only one man could win the final and that driver was Randy Slack of York, who, as it turns out, was not one of the heat winners, so on this night, there were five different winners in this class. Slack did an amazing job of commanding this race and following in close proximity and taking second place was Gary Mead of Orillia and in third was Alec Jordan of Mississauga. In Late Model Division, Dave Taylor was the double winner of the evening as he won a heat and the feature race. This race saw lots of spins, hard charges and crashes too. It was very ex- citing to watch. In second was Tom Milligan of Woodbridge and in third was Wayne Keeling of London. In Thundercar Division, the same thing happened as in the Sportsman Division, as four dif- ferent winners took each of the heats and a fifth driver took the final. Pops Sullivan from Whit- by was in commanding style as he took the.feature event and was all smiles in victory lane as he accepted his trophy for this week. It was a great race and everyone enjoyed it. In second was Mark Thorpe of Richmond Hill and in third was Ron De- ninger of Toronto. Next weekend (Aug. 22 and 23) the GM Motorsport 200 takes place as Mosport Interna- tional Speedway once again hosts The American/Canadian Tour (ACT) (part of The GM Na- tional Stock Car Series) and the International ~~ Supermodified Association (ISMA Supermods) as well as the four regular divi- sions of Street Stock, Late Mod- els, Late Model Sportsman and Thundercars. Basketball team says thanks two states. We will have a team competing in the N.B.A. "Street Hoops" Tournament at the To- ronto SkyDome this weekend and the competition experience in Pennsylvania will give us a significant assist in this regard. t is also to be noted that the team of Shawna Cornish, Marci Zuly and Julie Ball were voted, by the tournament organizers, as the team best exemplifying sportsmanship and fair play in their division and also deserv- ing of particular commendation were Kylie Kearns, Lori Bus- cher and Kristy Corden, who drew the most difficult oppo- nents in the tournament and, despite a significant size disad. vantage in terms of height and weight, never quit.
