32 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 30, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Mosport International Speedway roars back to life once again By Nelson Hudes After being rained out a week earlier, Mosport International Speedway roared to life once again this past weekend {June 27} with its thrilling brand of stock car racing action which in- ciudes Street Stock, Sports- man, Late Model, and Thunder- car divisions. This weekend also provided some extra excitement for the fans as a ladies race was put on the schedule as a special fea- ture event. The ladies races are comprised of the wives or the girlfriends of the drivers who regularly compete here at Mos- port International Speedway. Well, this race did not disap- point anyone as the women donned their helmets, put on their driving suits and took to the track as if they did it every week themselves. It sure was exciting to see them going door handle to door handle as they put on a great show with lots of passes, spins and hard charges. But in the end it was Donna Smith from Port Perry who took the checkered flag and the win as she stormed across the finish line very proud and deserving. Second place went to Debbie Shepstone, also from Port Perry and in third was Laura David- son from Toronto. In the Street Stock division, Andy Warbutton {from Oshawa} had a flawless night as he won two heat races early in the evening and then stormed home across the finish line like never before, capturing the fea- ture race, taking the trophy ana the coveted victory lap in style. Not far behind and staying close to Warbutton and able to grab second place was Jim Rossiter from Scarborough. Third went to Graham Brown of Willow- dale. In the Sportsman division, Ken Puston {from Caledon} was the happy man of the evening as he won a heat early in the eve- ning and then went on to smoke everybody on the race track as he did some incredible driving and went on to win the feature race as well. In second and do- ing some amazing driving heats of his own to stay with the lead- er was Daryl Leatherdale from Blackstock. In third, after some hard charges, as well as spins was Gary Mead from Orillia. In the Late Model Division, Dave Taylor was the man with a mission as he too won a heat and cruised home past the fin- ish line and took the checkered fag first. Second went to Wayne Keeling from London and in third was Rino Mountanari from Stouftville. In the Thundercar division, Royce Jones {of Fraserville) was the double winner of the eve- ning as he stormed across the finish line first in an early eve- ning heat as well as capturing second place in the feature race. Winning the feature was Mark Thorpe of Richmond Hill and in third was Rob Mayberry of Mill- brook. Next weekend is Erin Maxx Night, who are the makers of NASCAR trading cards and new this year, the Trans-Am tour. As well, the week after next {July 11-12} the Bud Triple Crown 100 takes place where we will see the American/ Canadian Tour (GM National Stock Car Series) as well as the Supermods return for this dou- ble header weekend. Don't miss either of these exciting events! Report from T-ball By Trevor Jones Another successful night of T- Ball at R.H. Cornish School came down June 23.
