Port Perry to host Canadian Shuffleboard Championships By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star Port Perry will play host to the Canadian National Shuffle- board Championships from July 7-9. To prepare for the event, about 30 members of the Cana- dian National Shuffleboard As- sociation (CNSA) converged on the Scugog Arena on Friday to paint 18 courts on the ice pad and to prepare the arena for the bigevent. Jack House of Stoney Creek paints the shuffleboard courts on the surface of the rink. Eighteen courts were set up and the rink has the capacity of holding four more courts if needed. Open House July 2 Shuffleboard is a fun sport for everyone. That's what the Canadian National Shuffleboard Associa- tion and the Scugog Shuffle- board Club hope area residents will find out during an open house at the new shuffleboard facility at the Scugog Arena. The two groups are hosting a Shuffleboard Open House at the arena on Thursday, July 2. The event starts at 1 p.m. and goes until4 p.m. Interested persons will be shown a few tricks of the trade and given a chance to play a game. Videotapes on shuffleboard- ing will also be shown. About 100 teams are expected to enter the three-day doubles tournament, said Hugh Ormis- ton, president of the Scugog Shuffleboard Club, 3rd vice- president of the CNSA, and rep- resentative of the International Shuffleboard Club Association. Amateurs will take to the courts on the first day. It will be a best two out of three format with the winner of each game being decided after 12 rounds of play or the first to reach 75 points. The second day will be an open event using the same for- mat. Prizes will be awarded to the top four finishers in the champi- onship and consolation rounds. Registration begins each day at 8 a.m. with the tournament startingat9a.m. Lunch, coffee, and doughnuts will be available. Parking will be available for recreational ve- hicles. Shuffleboarding is a popular sport in Canada (900 CNSA members in Ontario alone), and is a sport Canadians excel at in the international ring, Frank Willson, president of the CNSA told the Port Perry Star. "We have competed at the in- ternational level for 11 years and have won the event for the past five years in a row," Mr. Willson said, adding "We have some of the best shufflers in the world." Shuffleboard received its biggest boost in 1988 when the Ministry of Sports and Recrea- tion recognized it as being a sport, said Chris Stutzmann, president of the Ontario Shuf- fleboard Association. Up until that time there were no official clubs in Ontario. There are now more than 30, in- cluding the newly-formed Scu- gog Shuffleboard Club. Shuffleboard is fun, easy and inexpensive to play. But on top of that, Mr. Willson said it is a game anyone can play, includ- ing people with handicaps. In fact, the CNSA is hosting the non-walking singles champion- ships at the Thedford Commu- nity Arena from August 11-13.
