This is ill conceived and pat- ently irresponsible. It is based on the belief that only ideology should drive public policy deci- sions. When health dollars are so scarce, they must be used to improve health care, not to im- plement the ideological belief that "private is bad." No public policy purpose would be served by the unneces- sary expenditure of public funds to try to change the own- ership of those long term care facilities which are currently providing a much needed ser- vice to a rapidly growing seniors population. And it would fur- ther limit consumer choice at a time when seniors are increas- ingly concerned about their ability to choose the type of care they will have in future. If the government attempts to privatize nursing homes, it would send another negative signal to the financial commu- Column was offending To the Editor: I grew up in Port Perry and read the Port Perry Star from start to finish. Even now when I come home to visit, the first thing I do is grab the paper to see what's happening in Port Perry. I have never read anything in the Star that has offended me like your article of May 20, 1992 on breastfeeding. I believe breastfeeding should be done discreetly and not with blatant disregard for others feelings, however, there was absolutely no need for him to be so rude and ignorant in his writing of that article. This arti- cle is an insult to every woman who has ever breastfed her chil- dren. Did he think he was being funny? If so - he should keep his jokes to himself. I did not find the article funny at all! In fact the further I read into it - the angrier I became. Breastfeeding is a natural thing. I'm sure that if men like him had to bear a child and breastfeed that child - he cer- tainly would have more sympa- thy towards those women who choose to breastfeed their chil- dren. If he was so offended by the sight he could have solved the problem very easily by moving to another table. Weren't you ever taught that it's rude to ! see a woman breastfeed her child. How would he ever han- dleit? With all the important things that are happening in our world and cities and towns, I would think he could have come up with something that had a lot more integrity than this article. Lakeshore Area/Bowmanville 1-800-263-8028 Cathy Olmstead nity of its unfriendly attitude towards the private sector, and encourage the flight of capital out of Ontario when investment 18 desperately needed to move us out of recession. Currently the private sector in Long Term Care has a capital investment of $1.1 billion in Ontario. The cost of conversion would be exorbitant. For example, in Metro Toronto, the non-profit beds cost $13,000 more per bed per year to operate. With 5,850 private sector beds, CUPE's proposal would cost the public treasury an additional $76 mil- lion a year in operating costs in Metro Toronto alone. And not one new bed would be added, nor would there be any guarantee of improvement in the quality of care. The real is- sue -- which CUPE totally ig- nores -- is the care provided to residents and the health care outcomes achieved. The invest- ment should be made in care, not ownership. - Why would we want to repeat the day care experience? The government allocated $26 mil- lion to convert private day care centres to non-profit centres, and not one new space was created. Had the $26 million been invested in increasing ca- pacity, rather than in pursuing the ideological purity, 5,200 new day care spaces could have been created. ~ A healthy mix of private and public facilities integrated into an effective delivery system is in the best interests of the con- sumer -- and the taxpayer. 'Sincerely yours, C.W. Dillane, Chairman of the Board. Distinct Society unacceptable To the Editor: Quebec as a "distinct society" is totally unacceptable. It is un- digestible for most of the Cana- dian palate. We, the people, will never ac- cept one province of our country as preferred for any reason. Itis traitorous and mutinous for leading politicians to manipu- late our representatives into de- claringit so - unity or no unity! The premiers have ignored the recommendations of 75 per cent of our people to please 25 per cent or less of them. The "distinct society" clause makes the Constitution not worth the paper it's written on. Political honor and integrity has become defunct. Nobody stands on guard for Canada it seems. : In true sincerity and awareness, Vona Mallory and Associates, Barrie, Ontario.
