The June 16 match-up at S.A. Cawker field saw both teams joust early on for the lead with the edge going to the Rankin team by the mid-way point. The excellent pitching of Mat- thew Steurgess of Pineridge Sports along with his team- mates, Jason Lown, who played superbly in left field and Aaron Chambers, with a fantastic catch at the shortstop position, kept the suspense going in this one to the very end. However, the floodgates opened when Mike Cannon stepped to the plate in the Ran- kin half of the final inning with the bases loaded. With two out and a full count of three and two against him, Cannon hammered a blast to- wards heaven for a grand slam that cemented the win for his team. Ace pitcher for Ray Rankin, Scott Harper, made his own dramatic contribution too with his best outing so far this sea- son to hold Pineridge to their eight runs. Together with the solid catch- ing of Jamie Clark and the all round super defensive plays and the awesome offense from the bats, Scott and Mike and the whole Ray Rankin Carpen- try team'put it all together for a classic, slump ending, victory to carry them into the second half ofthe season. Seagrave Higgons and Clarke face off against Pizza Delight As each week of baseball goes by, one can see the steady im- provement in the players and the confidence they are gaining. And this was evident on Mon- day, June 15 at Perry Glen dia- mond as both Seagrave Higgons and Clark and Pizza Delight played great baseball, right from the first pitch to the last out. With a full contingent of proud cheering parents, Pizza Delight jumped out to an early lead with both teams showing great concentration at the plate and making some fine defensive plays. Seagrave came out hit- ting in the third inning, scoring five runs and closing the gap. There were two awesome hits, a triple by Cris Higgons (two hits, one run) for Seagrave in the sec- ond inning and a triple by Pierce Jones (three hits, two runs) for Pizza Delight in the third inning. Also having a big game were: for Seagrave - Jef- frey Blair, two hits; and Rebec- ca MacDonald, two hits and a big out; and for Pizza Delight - Nicole Virtue, three hits, two runs; and Michael Lycett, three hits, one run. After five innings and when the dust had settled, the Pizza crew held off Sea- grave in their last bat for a well- played 17-10. For 7-8 Mites update for June 22, next week. Mites ball action Another week at the ball field proved to be fun for all as Dylan Harper of Hanks started the scoring off by batting in the first run. Later in the third Michael Elaschuk ran the bases to score again. Marshall Irwin and Kel- lan Jackson scored in the third for Hanks to take the lead. Cottrells never gave up to score in the first with Jason Cot- trell batting in the first run. Krystal Archibald scored in the third to tie the game but Andy Drebit really shined that night by scoring the winning run. He also made a great play just be- fore that by making a triple play in the last inning assisted by Jesse Mischtian to shut down Hanks by a score of 9-8. Saintfield vs. Greenbank Saintfield Machining defeats Greenbank Variety 18 to 5 on June 17. Greenbank had super field- ing plays with fly catching by Adam Lamb and Brent Couch, and great back catching by Jen- nifer Hancock. Derek Ellicott was hot at the plate with a triple, knocking in two runs. Good defensive plays for Saintfield, with special mention to Shannon Mahood and Vale- rie Ward, and a line drive caught by Joel Thomson. Strong batting by the team, with Mi- chael Wadsworth belting out hard hits.
