This week's activities began with a Roman Catholic mass in Breastfeeding forum June 24 How are breastfeeding babies faring in Durham Region? Na- tional trends show that most mothers wish to breastfeed but abandon nursing because of lack of information and sup- port. If this topic is of concern to you, feel welcome to attend an open forum called "Breastfeed- ing in 5 Durham...Building Bridges." The featured speaker will be Dr. Jack Newman, the well-known authority from the Hospital for Sick Children's Breastfeeding Clinic. This for- um is co-sponsored by the Victo- rian Order of Nurses {V.O.N.}, and the Durham Breastfeeding Coalition. The V.O.N. is currently con- ducting a breastfeeding project to help nursing mothers and ba- bies in Durham Region. More details regarding participation will be available at the forum. The Durham Breastfeeding Coalition is a group committed to promoting breastfeeding in our community and includes representatives from our local hospitals, La Leche League, La- maze Association, Public Health Department, V.O.N., Parents of Multiple Births As- sociation, Caesarean Preven- tion, Support and Education Group, as well as a midwife, pe- diatrician, nutritionist and lac- tation consultant. This coalition has recently published "The Durham Region Breastfeeding Manual - A Com- rehensive = Handbook for ealth Professionals." The manual will be displayed at the open forum. There will also be other displays of interest to ex- pecting and new parents. There are two locations: Mon- day, June 22, 1992 - 7-9 p.m. at the Michael Starr Building, 33 King Street West, Oshawa or Wednesday, June 24, 1992, 7-9 p.m. at St. Paul's on the Hill, 882 Kingston Road East, Pick- ering. In the af- ternoon a lot of happy memories were shared during a quiz on spring time and happiness. This was followed by gardening, an activity more and more resi- dents are getting interested and actively involved in. Our Residents Council Meet- ing on May 20 took in many top- ics, one of them being a discus- sion on a trip this year and any other outings the residents are interested in taking. May 21 was such a beautiful day. Many went outside for walks while others set up for Supper Club. May 22, many residents painted pictures to hang in the fountain. On Monday, poems of spring were read aloud. Resident Council President, Ray Seager presented two hos- pital residents with the trophy for winning the Fitweek Chal- lenge. May 26, Lois Barren conduct- ed a hymn sing while others en- joyed a game of euchre. On Wednesday, we took a bus load of residents, as well as some from the Villa to Cullen Gardens to view hundreds of beautiful flowers and to visit the Miniature Village. It was a lovely day. We stopped for lunch and just watching the many sparrows fly around was a real treat. Thursday Ray Seager was the winner of a dart game. Magic talents were performed by Pe- ter Laughran. In the evening everyone gathered around their new big screen television to watch a movie. At Bible Care College on Fri- day, a talk was given on not giv- ing up or getting discouraged.
