"A Famlly Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 23, 1992 - 15 ee A -------------- TEE Show a family affair Local artist making name for himself in the art community By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Everyday experiences affects each of us differently. For Tyler Briley they have a profound in- fluence. Mr. Briley 's collection of real- ism and abstract works is cur- rently being featured at Scugog Memorial Library in Port Perry. "My artwork just basically re- flects life and my Areva on life," he says. Using bronze as the main me- dium of work, Mr. Briley derives his inspiration from "everyday experiences." And with Mr. Briley's job as a full-time firefighter in Scarbo- rough, he has a chance to experi- ence life in a slightly different way. Often with lasting impres- sions. Take for example his work "Spiritual and Physical Death." This piece was inspired by a car accident in Scarborough in which a woman's child was killed. Mr. Briley said the wom- an seemed almost spiritual af- ter learning of her child's fate. The bronze sculpture depicts the woman's grief. Other works, he says, repre- sent his "philosophies on life." His work "Outside and In" a dark abstract, depicts the cate- gorization of society and those that fall through the cracks." Mr. Briley says society tends to categorize and pigeon hole things, instead of just accepting things. He says while many are accepted, many more are lucky ifthey become accepted. Despite having no formal art training, Mr. Briley has literal- ly carved his name in the art community. He has been fea- tured at the Royal Ontario Mu- seum, the King Edward Hotel, the Wildlife Gallery of Toronto and the McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa.
