et -- ----r aa oe - ¢ -- I ------ Bal Cae --- = 36- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 16, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Scugog Angels tie the Oshawa Double Bs 3-3 In the opening game of the season in Port Perry, the Oshawa Double "Bs" defeated the local Scugog Angels, but on Thursday in Oshawa, the An- gels let everyone know that we, are for real. The game ended up in a 3-3 tie after seven innings. The Scugog Angels opened up with a run off Lisa Best single, Jackie Dempster then doubled, to put runners in scoring posi- tions for Michelle Reader's sac- rifice fly to right, scoring Best. The Angels then proceeded to shut down Oshawa through five innings. Kim Stewart led off the fifth with a single, advancing to sec- ond on an infield out, moved to third on Brenda Elford's single, then good old Tracey Smith drove in two runs on her single, . giving the Angels a 3-0 lead. Oshawa got those two back on back to back singles an error, put the runners on third and second. Both scored on another single and this came after two were out. The Angels got noth- ing in the sixth and seventh in- nings. But Oshawa were able to score one in the seventh to tie 3- 3 and end the game. League rules on curfew at the park provided a tie breaker, so all games after seven innings stay a tie. Tracey Smith led off with a single, followed by Lisa Best and Jackie Dempster's single, loaded the bases. Gena Spence drew a walk/one run in, Mi- chelle Reader walked, then Nancy McConnell singled home three runs, with a long hit, and an over throw went to second, advancing to third on Joyce Par- kinson's infield out. Kim Stew- art drew a walk as did Janie Thornton, then Tracey Smith drew home two more runs, giv- ing Scugog Angels 7-0 lead. The Angels proceeded to hold off the Oshawa teams till the fifth, when they picked up these only runs. Till then it was all Ja- nie Thornton as she pitched a four letter for the night. This is two games in a row that she pitched a super effort. The Angels put two more runs batted in, the ladies got me more in the sixth - with Parky leading off with a run stole sec- ond, then scored on Janie Thornton single Jennifer Smith, Tracey's sister picked up her first hit as an Angel. Nancy McConnell three hits and three RBIs was big tonight, Joyce Parkinson triple and sin- gle, Janie Thornton's four hit putching an two hits. Tracey Smith had two hits and two runs batted in, Lisa Best, Jack- ie Dempster eachhad a single. Next week the Angesl are 1n Oshawa for a 7 p.m. game, against the St. Fabs on Tues- day, June 16. Then they'll have Oshawa Mackies in town next Sunday night, you won't want to miss this one. This team de- feated the Angels 4-3 earlier on. Mite action In a hard fought game Green- bank Variety edged Coldwell- Banker 11-10. For Greenbank Derek Ellicott made an excel- lent catch, Ryan Kehoe had a triple and Adam Lamb was an excellent sport. For Coldwell-Banker Geoff Grievson had a grand slam home run. Thomas Greenough played solidly at first base and Trevor Wersflock pitched a strong game. Gamblers in action From Page 33 and the powerful Toronto- Metro Merchants would meet in the Baltimore final but North York pulled off a major upset by knocking off the Mer- chants in the semi-final. A great weekend perfor- mance by the Greenbank team. This Thursday night sees the Peterborough I.C.G. squad at [anson Park for an 8 p.m. tussle with the Gamblers. The Gamblers and I.C.G. cur- rently are tied for top position in the Peterborough league with 11 points, one point better than Winslow-Gerolamy. This weekend the Gamblers are hosting a mixed lob-ball tournament and still have some openings for a few teams. I A NR NS 20 YEARS AGO Terry Franssen and Phil Cochrane were chosen as best senior female and male athlete at the track and field championships. Both are students at R.H. Cornish Public School. 20YEARS AGO WEDNESDAY, JUNE 14,1972 Beare Motors, sponsor of the Bantam hockey team treated players and their families to dinner in celebration of a successful year. The Bantam squad went to the wire against Kincardine in the All-Ontario hockey championship. Port lost in the final game by a4-3 score. The newly formed Pee Wee baseball team made its debut in the Twin County Softball League defeating Beaverton 23-4. Bill Owen and Phil Cochrane shared the pitching duties. Colin-Wackett had two doubles, two singles and a triple and Mike Healey had three singles, 2 double and a triple to lead the team in hits. : Professional wrestling came to the Scugog Arena. There were six bouts during the evening including the tag team feature match which pitted Watson Jr. and Singh against the Masked Medics. . Ballard's Lumbermen recorded one win and two losses in league ac- tion. L 1SYEARSAGO WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15,1977 The Molson Ontario Motocross Championships were held just southeast of Port Perry. A large crowd turned out to see the elite 200 drivers from across Canada and the United States compete. The Grant Menzies Pee Wees defeated Claremont 9-6. Hitters in- cluded Blayone, Lovering, Horton, Young, Robinson and Fewer. The Midget baseball team gained three points to move into third place in the York-Ontario-Simcoe League. The team defeated Brad- ford 3-2. The team clinched the win when Dennis Franssen scored on Dan Taylor's sacrifice fly. The team then tied Sunderland later in the week 11-11. Dan Taylor and Steve Geer led the way in the hitting de- partment with three hits each. The CHUM all-stars will be meeting the volunteer firemen from Scugog Fire Department Hall #1 in a softball game. CHUM all-stars will include Jim VanHorne and Don Major. All proceeds from the event go towards Muscular Dystrophy. ' 10 YEARS AGO TUESDAY, JUNE 15,1982 The Mother Jacksons' Pee Wees are off to a good start in league play with four wins and a tie in five games. Garnet Warriner, Ted Culbert and Fred Cockerton are the coaches of the team. It took 11 innings but Goreski's Insulation kept its unbeaten streak alive by defeating Oshawa 2-1. Russ Korbak got the win for Goreski's. The winning run came after George Redshaw tagged a double, ad- vanced to third ona passed ball and got home on a Phil Solomon single. The Port Perry Legion Squirts increased their unbeaten streak to seven games with three wins over Markham and Stouffville. Hitters in- cluded Mike Hanson, Raymond Shier, Robbie Brown, Tim Allsopp and Jamie Mahoney. Meet Your Team Day at Sunnybrac Golf Course was held. Leona Tripp had low gross of 47. Low putts were 15 by Marie Charles and Vivian Rider. Cartwright Minor Ball got underway with four junior teams hitting the diamonds. The Greenbank Gamblers split two league games. The team defeat - cd the Zephyr As, but were then handed their first loss by the Sunder- land Harvesters.
