TET TT Te 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 16, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star Mike and Maria Post "take life as it comes." And life just threw them a curve ball that isn't expected to cross the plate until September. The Posts, who live on High- way 7A west of Blackstock, re- cently learned that a large par- cel of land located directly across the road from their home, could be turned into the long- term landfill site needed to serve the needs of Durham Re- gion residents. Seventeen sites were an- nounced by the Interim Waste Authority (IWA)on June 4. Five of the sites are in Scugog Town- ship: Three are located on High- way 12 south of Manchester, and the other two are located on Highway 7A at the Cartwright West 1/4 Line. The IWA expects to narrow the list down to three sites by September. The Posts understand the need for a long-term landfill site. "There has to be a dump," Mr. Post told the Port Perry Star. "Everyone realizes that." And if one of the two sites lo- cated across the road is selected as the solution to Durham's landfill woes, the Posts say they will understand the necessity. But what they don't under- stand is the lack of compensa- tion for neighboring residents. "This is our real concern," Mr. Post said. "Our property won't be worth a plug nickel." At present, anyone whose land is expropriated for a land- fill site receives financial com- pensation. But neighboring res- 1dents who must continue to live beside the site receive nothing inreturn. "We asked if they (the govern- ment) would buy us out or if they would compensate us (fi- nancially)," Mrs. Post said. "Mr. (Conrad) Gelot said they don't have to give us any com- pensation," Mr. Post added. (Mr. Gelot is the Durham site selection co-ordinator for the IWA)) That's heart-breaking news for the couple who has invested their lifesavings into their home. The Posts bought the modest one-and-a-half storey home in 1959, raised a family there, and were just starting to enjoy their retirement years. They have taken pride in their property, from tastefully decorating their home to main- taining and beautifying the one- acre parcel it sits on. "I've often said I hope they carry me out of here feet first," Mr. Post said. But he added that if he and his wife are graced with long lives, keeping up the property may become too much and they hoped the money they would receive from selling the home would set them up in an apartment. ns ae A $0 News that a long-term landfill site may be located across from their home shocked Mike and Maria Post. Although they realize the need for a site to serve the needs of Durham Region residents, the Posts are concerned about the impact the site will have on the resale value of their home. This is what worries us the most," he said. "This is not just our story," Mrs. Post said, adding everyone Dump will affect resale value who lives next to a proposed site isin the same dilemma. For Mike and Maria Post, and all other landowners who live near a proposed landfill site, the dilemma will continue for at least the next three months. Then, they will have a better idea as to whether they are home safe or if they've been stranded on first base. Country Convenience Blackstock's new site for postal services By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A convenience store in Black- stock has been chosen as the new site for mail services in the community.
