Results from the Canoe the Nonquon Story and Photos by Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star More than 150 people partici- pated in the 24th running of the Canoe the Nonquon race held on Saturday. The pace was fast and furious at the starting line where offi- cials Yvonne Christie, Don Fos- ter and Penny Pettypiece start- ed more than 20 teams within the first 25 minutes. Before it was all over, 76 teams of canoeists launched their crafts into the murky wa- ters of the Nonquon River under the Old Simcoe Street bridge at Concession 10. One competitor told the Port Perry Star the canoeists were challenged by numerous beaver dams and "mosquitos the size of small geese", but the obstacles didn't dampen the spirits of those participating.
