Here are current observa- tions. I am consistently thrilled by the amazing talents and gene- rosity exhibited by many of Port Perry's residents. Recent exam- ples come to mind. To wit, the eerie, evocative wood sculptures of new artist Ralph Price which were recent- ly on display at our delightful little Scugog Library Art Gal- lery. Medieval in tone, modern in texture, their simplicity yet obviously dedicated creation with ecclesiastical overtones stay with the viewer long after the viewing itself. Kudos to a new light on the art horizon. A second nod goes to Tom and Catherine Millar, Grace Has- tings, and Kent Farndale, re- cently presented with prestig- ious 1 escarbot awards. I've had the pleasure of working with all of them at various times and each experience was a cultural high, especially the recent pro- duction of "The King And I" and 1989's "Anne Bonney." And a third mention has to go to the dedicated Town Hall 1873 board of directors (of which I'm privileged to have been a member since its 1974 inception} which unstintingly works at keeping the town's ma- jor venue for the performing arts in performing order. The generosity of such folks as May- or Howard Hall, who last month presented the structure with a set of beautiful coach lamps for the entrances, and countless other kind donors, is to be high- ly commended. What other small town pro- duces so many true originals? You all keep "Our Town" aglow. Keep up the culture. To borrow from writer Joseph Conrad; "...the artist appeals...to that in us which is a gift and not an ac- quisition -- and, therefore, more permanently enduring. She/he speaks to our capacity for de- light and wonder, to the sense of mystery surrounding our lives; our sense of... beauty." Let us continue to encourage and de- velop that sense. Yours culturally, Diane Lackie, Port Perry. Cancer Society says thanks To the Editor: The April Cancer Campaign has finally come to a close. We collected $38,945.93.
