30 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 2, 1992 The PPHS Junior boys rugby team lost in the DYSSA final to a tough team from Markham. The final score was 33-15. The DYSSA finals were held at the Scugog Youth Soccer Fields on Friday. Bantams get off to a slow start The Port Perry Bantams got off to 'a slow start in the 1992 York-Durham Fastball League, dropping a close decision in Pickering, then coming out on the short end of an offensive dis- play by Scarborough Reds. Monday, Port got a quick start when Joe Broadworth's RBI triple cashed Paul Linton who had opened the game with a walk. After Pickering tied it, Bill Zaparanuik led off the sec- ond with a walk and was driven in by Dave Bourgeois' double. Bourgeois then scored on Brent Harper's fielder's choice. Port starter Chad Kearns ran into tough luck in the second, when Pickering bunched two in- field hits, two solid singles, and three walks to score six times. Kearns notched one strikeout. Zaparanuik turned in two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one K before Mike Un- derwood finished up with two strong innings, yielding four runs on four hits, one walk, one Port rallied for two more runs in the sixth, Linton doubled, B.J. Wilson walked, and Jake Waznicki plated them both with a double. That was all they could muster for an 11-5 final. Underwood and Kearns each contributed a single to the cause. Tuesday night Port hosted the Reds, who are an extremely solid club. When the leadoff man punched the second pitch over the centre field fence, it was obvious it would be a battle. Zaparanuik started and gave up four runs on five hits and a walk. Underwood came on in the second, pitching a strong six innings. Reds touched him up for nine hits, six walks and Port had a few errors as they rang up another 12 runs. Port counted once in the second when Zapar- anuik tripled and scored on Un- derwood's single. All other scoring potential came up short, making the final score 16-1 despite a creditable effort. Broadworth and Kearns had the only other hits as two Scarborough pitchers combined for a four hit, 10 strikeout per- formance. Homestead defeats Pickering Homestead Furniture Under 16 Girls soccer team opened their season on May 26 against Pickering Village Plymouth- Chrysler with a 3-1 win. Home- stead goals scored by Sarah Coyne and Shawna Cornish with two. Two nights later Homestead travelled to Pickering again to play Pickering Kalon Group. Goals by Shawna Cornish with two and singles going to Emily Cosway, Sara Brown, Kelly Phipps and with her first ever goal was Heather Bredin. Kelly Phipps and Sarah Coyne shared in the shutout. The regular Saturday night Bud Stocks are back this season with the Street Stocks, the Sportsman and the Late Model classes as well as a new series, the Thunder cars. This is a low cost class designed for the aspiring racer and should prove to be exciting and spectacular. The other addition to the Speedway this year is harder to spot but if you are able to catch a glimpse of a blur wearing a headset and a Budweiser Racing shirt, you have probably just seen the new Track Operations Manager, Wayne Fergusen. "Fergie" has paid his dues over the span of his racing involvement. Starting as a corner worker 30 years ago at the Bell City Speedway, he moved up the ladder to become the official starter and has worked in that capacity at several other tracks including Cedar Circle Speedway and Brighton Speedway. He then switched venues to Westgate Speedway in Peterborough, where, for more than 20 years he called the starting stand home before Model series. Fergie left the racing scene for a year but, in spite of all efforts to retire, he had a strong urge to return the phone call from Mosport president, Harvey Hudes. Mr. Hudes contacted me and asked if | would be interested in running the show at Mosport" explains Fergie. "| was rather enjoying my free summer weekends but my wife explained to me that stock car racing was my one greatest passion and that | would probably go grumpy on her without it, so | returned Harvey's call and accepted the job." Fergie's organizational skills will be tested this year as his plans become more ambitious. "We're expecting over 120 cars here on most Saturday nights and eventually we'd like to run 20 races per night. Add to that the specialty races with the ACT Tour, the ISMA Modifieds and the CASCAR series and you can see that we've got a busy year ahead of us." With Wayne Fergusen's wealth of experience, even this hectic schedule will be a joy and adventure for fans and racers alike. Watch this space for dates of upcoming events. Darryl Leatherdale is the reigning Late Model Sportsman champion at Mosport and is competing in the NASCAR Sportsman series south of the border and | had a chance to talk to him after his first race at Charlotte North Carolina. "| was really impressed with the track and the speed" says Darryl. It was a total learning experience for us. Even our crash was something new!!" The accident occurred when, coming through corner's one and two, a car spun down onto the track's apron. Unfortunately, the driver let off of the brake too soon and the car shot back up the track, hitting the Leatherdale Buick and forcing him into the wall. Although the car suffered some severe front end damage, Darryl luckily emerged with only some torn rib cage muscles and bruises. The Blackstock driver observes, "Everyone down there is trying so hard. There are 80 plus cars registered for each race with 42 cars on the track for every heat and only so many guys can make the final. Accidents are going to . happen." Darryl figures the car will not be ready for the next race, but plans to be at Pocono in July. In the meantime, watch for the black and gold Port Perry Auto Wreckers/Bridgeport Signs Buick to be at Mosport as this young charger tries to defend his crown on his home track. Quickly now, some upcoming events and pit-patter. On July 13 and 14, the ACT Tour and the ISMA Modifieds will pay their first visit to Mosport Speedway with the feature races going on a Sunday Matinee. For vintage racing fans, the annual Vintage Car Festival runs at the Mosport road ccurse next weekend, June 6 and 7. A very special Brickyard Bouquet for Scott Goodyear on his amazing Worst to First and a half finish at the 1992 Indianapolis 500. Atta boy Scott!! Another Maple Leaf checkered flag as Toronto's Jeremy Dale takes the victory in the IMSA GTS race at Mosport on Victoria Day. And a special congratulations to Kenny Wilden who was a guest of Port Perry's in the "Proud to be Canadian" day parade. Kenny set the fastest qualifying time and went on to take the win in the first race of the Player's Ltd./GM Motorsports series. Wall, outa time, outa space, gotta go. See you when the green flag drops, from Corner Five. moving on to an advisory position with the fledgling OSSCAR Late. "Paul Heffernan stepped down as promoter in the fall. of 1991.and.
