Tom Millar, Catherine Mil- lar, and Grace Hastings were each presented their award by Durham MP Ross Stevenson on Thursday afternoon. "This is a special honor for us, because we are the first people to receive the Lescarbot award," Mrs. Millar said. The Government of Canada's Department of Communica- tions instituted the Lescarbot awards earlier this year to pay tribute to those Canadians who support the cultural sector. Mrs. Hastings was born in Port Perry, and has lived in the Scugog area all her life. She was a music teacher and supervisor for many years, and has also directed and organized many choirs, musical events and concerts in the Scugog area. They are responsible for the many spectacular performanc- es put on by the youth theatri- cal group 'Millar Lights'. "It's such an experience work- ing with the children because there is so much young talent in this community," Mrs. Millar said. The Millars are also active in the Scugog Choral Society, and Dr. Millar said the society will have a new musical out in the fall.
