Transforming the John Elliott Theatre in Georgetown into 1850’s London is not an easy task, yet with drive, determination and sheer talent, Globe has yet another success on its hands in Lionel Bart’s “Oliver”. It has been a long time since early June, when work first began on “Oliver” and Carolyn Hooper, producer formed quite a formidable production team. Carolyn also produced “Hello Dolly” and last fall’s smash “My Fair Lady”. Ms. Hooper welcomes the challenge of working with such a large cast and appre- ciates the enthusiasm and talent of Globe’s new young actors in this particular production. Through the generosity of the Theatre Ontario Talent Bank, Globe was fortunate enough to have engaged the services of a professional lighting designer. This is a part of a program in which local community theatre groups can learn and grow through professional direc- tion and instruction. Our lighting designer, Mark Stevens, came highly qualified for such a task. Born in British Columbia, Mark has spent many years living and working in light design all over this great land of ours. He has a graduate degree in technical theatre from John Abbott College in Montreal and is an active mem- ber of the Associate Designers of Canada. He is cur- rently the technical director for Meadowvale Theatre in Mississauga. Among his many light design credits are MCCO’s “Carmen”, “The Merry Widow” and Bo Meadowvale Theatre’s “Madame Butterfly”. Mark’s expertise is responsible for several mood altering moments audiences experience as they watch the story of “Oliver” unfold. In the area of set design, we have Jackie Willows, a seasoned veteran with GLT in over 32 productions. She has not only designed sets for productions such as “The Best of Friends” and “Second Time Around” but has also directed with GLT in “Opera Comique”. Jackie is responsible for the attention to style and detail indicative of 19th century England. As Stage Manager, we have Lynne Terry, a resident of Brampton and an active member of the Brampton theatre scene. Her recent credits as Stage Manager include “Jesus Christ Superstar:, “Fatal Attraction” and BLT’s “Hayfever”. It’s Lynne’s direction and take charge approach that has gotten the cast through many an evening of rehearsals. Assisting Lynne in her duties as Stage Manager is Jim Pace who is also Globe’s resident stage manager. Not only is Jim busy with lighting cues and set changes, but he also found the time to assemble a con- struction crew to build the sets themselves. The end result is simply breathtaking. Rounding out the production team are the very capa- ble Mary Griffin, Properties Manager; Rachelle Warburton and Mary Bilik our resident Costume Designers; Gerry Andrews as resident Make-up Designer and Vesta Jorgensen, Manager of Front of House staff. Well, my work as Publicist for this production of “Oliver” is just about over but before I sign off, so to speak, I must thank all those who encouraged me in my efforts to make Oliver a household name: the local press for its extensive coverage of the whole “Oliver” phenomenon as well as cast members, family, and friends for their constant support. This is surely one experience I will not soon forget. Parties Here!
