Total price $14.2 million Durham accepts bridge tender By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Regional council has ap- proved a tender which will see the beginning of a bridge con- necting Scarborough with Dur- ham Region. At a meeting last Wednesday, the councillors voted in favor of the low tender submitted by Dufferin Construction Compa- ny, a division of St. Lawrence Cement. The company's bid of $12.8 million was accepted by the council members for the con- struction of the Taunton Road/ West Duffin Creek Bridge in the Town of Pickering. Total price of the bridge con- struction will be approximately $14.2 million. Ministry of Transportation subsidies ac- count for $9.9 million, reserve funds for roads total $2.79 mil- lion and $15 million from tax levies. . rd John Aker, Chairman of the Works Committee, said he was pleased with the amount of tenders they received and the price that they agreed upon. Mr. Aker told members of the regional council that the bridge construction "may be the larg- est tender ever let" in the Re- gion of Durham. The bridge, which will span Duffin Creek in west Pickering, will be 1,000 feet long and 110 feet high. It will be completed in 1993. The bridge will serve as a ma- jor east-west route to the north- ern portion of Metropolitan To- ronto. "We are very excited that this project is going through," said Pickering Councillor Rick John- son. "It's going to take a lot of trafficand alleviate alot of prob- lems." Cl SR, KELLY LOWN/ PORT PERRY STAR Man charged A Scugog Island man has been charged following the sex- ual assault of a Scugog teen. According to Durham Region- al Police, a 13-year-old girl was hitchhiking on Scugog Island on May 9 when she was picked up by a male driver. She was taken to a remote portion of the island and sexually assaulted. Following information given to police, a suspect was arrested later that day. A 41-year-old man from Scu- gog Island has been charged with sexual-assault. Flea market From Page 1 cut more or made obsolete, she added.
