A challenge has been issued by the hospital against the nurs- ing home to see who will have the highest percentage of par- ticipation in a 15-minute gentle gymon thatday. Gentle gym 1s a form of easy exercise techniques that is both mildly. physical and therapeu- tic. The hospital team, coached by members of the physiothera- py department and volunteers, will be involved in armchair ex- ercises for the entire body and a game of basketball. The team, which changes with admissions and discharg- es, gets together up to three times a week and is part of the hospital's HELP (Healthy Envi- ronment for Long-Term Pa- tients) program. The intention of HELP is to maintain and improve the level of activity and self-dignity of the hospital'slong-term patients. At the nursing home, resi- dents participate in a 15- minute gentle gym every Mon- day to Friday. Seated in a circle, partici- pants move to various types of music and do different physical activities using scarves, balls and bean bags. A winner will be determined by seeing which facility has the highest percentage of participa- tion. The winner of the chal- lenge will receive a trophy to be kept in their facility until next year's Fitweek. The Sneaker Day challenge between the hospital and nurs- ing home will serve as the kick- off for Scugog Township's own Fitweek challenge against Ux- bridge on ParticipACTION Day on Wednesday, May 27. Township residents will be encouraged to do some form of physical activity for at least 15 minutes on May 27. After they have completed their activity they should regis- ter their involvement by calling 985-7394. The township's par- ticipation will be rated against Uxbridge's, and the township with the highest percentage wins. The losing township will be forced to fly the winner's flag at their municipal building for one week. The Community Memorial Hospital will be involving its staff, volunteers, and hospital auxiliary in the challenge. A va- riety of different events have been organized by the physio- therapy departmentincluding a day gym, organized walks and special events during a barbe- cue lunch.
