"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 20, 1992 - 13 Canoe the Nonquon and Triathlon are June 6 By Marnie Luke Port Perry Star With snowmobiles, ice skates and skis packed away for the summer, it's time to dust off your canoes and paddles, and start practising for the 24th An- nual Canoe the Nonquon. There's just three weeks left to prepare for this year's race, which will take place on June 6. Organizing Committee mem- ber Joan Scott said she hopes to see many more people register thig year than the 50-60 canoes that raced last year. At times over the past 24 years, she said there were as many as 200 canoes in the race. "We're hoping people will cel- ebrate Canada 125 by coming out and taking part in Canoe the Nonquon," Mrs. Scott said. The race used to be the larg- est of its kind in Ontario, but is now ranked second, next to the Kawarthas. "We put Port Perry on the map with Canoe the Nonquon 24 years ago, so now we want to get all the locals who may have given it up years ago to come back out and participate," Mrs. Scott said. Hair samples found The Centre for Forensic Sci- ences in Toronto is testing hair samples after police found a number of different quantities of hair in Beaverton. Sgt. Sandy Ryrie from Dur- ham Regional Police says on three separate occasions quan- tities of hair were found near the Becker's store in Beaverton. The first lot was found on May 1. Sgt. Ryrie says they are tak- ing all precautions when deal- ing with the samples. The samples have been sent for forensic testing in Toronto to determine if it is human hair, and whether itis that of Kristen French. Miss French was re- cently murdered and her hair was crudely cut. Although police refuse to re- lease any specific details of the findings, Sgt. Ryrie said one sample of the hair found on a tree was determined to be there for a number of years. year's race include: - the Recreational class for non- competitive canoeists. - the age 17 and under class. - the Family Junior/Senior class, for one parent and a child under age 15. - the Masters age 40 and over class - the C2 18' 6" class for competi- tive or professional racers. Committee members will be stationed at bridges along the route, and radio and patrol boat units will monitor the safety of all canoes. Doreen Kendall has told the Port Perry Star that we can look forward to seeing herself and canoeing partner Bill Brock paddling their way down the river once again this year, in their canoe, 'Just Ducky'.
