"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Letters to the editor Cr ---------- a) 3 i ne Te EP pT i a= en meet -- i x -- i Easter Food Drive Operation Scugog held its annual Easter food drive over the weekend. Pictured is Doris Grierson, volunteer, at the food bank. The bank has increasingly been seeing more families use the bank in the past year due to high unemployment. The East- er drive had a fair turnout but was not as successful as the last drive at Christmas, Mrs. Grierson said. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 of their better players this season as Terry Davis is leaving to play in British Columbia. P. Hall is in Australia and Bob Carnegie will not be playing regularly as he is taking a summer course at university. A Boy Scout fire got out of control at Chalk Lake. The fire burned from the 3rd Concession to the 2nd Concession and about one mile across before it was stopped. 25 YEARS AGO Thursday, April 21, 1967 Ontario County Junior Farmers won the Zone Drama Festival held in Uxbridge with their performance of the one-act play "Comes Romance." The actors were all members of the Brooklin Junior Farmers: Shirley Jones, Ken Stickwood, David Hawthorne, Doreen Jones, Jan Hoskins and Carl Wilson. Director was Mrs. Almack of Claremont. The Department of the Attorney General recently announced the appointment of Mr. J. R. Helm of Port Perry as a Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Ontario. There will be a new feature for the Port Perry Fair this year with a Market Steer Class being added to the prize list. The steers will be weighed at the time of judging and sold by public auction immediately afterwards. The program is being sponsored jointly by the Ontario Department of Agriculture and the Port Perry Fair. Mr. and Mrs. George Samells of Port Perry have just returned from Jamaica where they spent a very enjoyable Easter vacation. 20 YEARS AGO Wednesday, April 19, 1972 Randy Watson, a student at Port Perry High School, was the winner of a merit award for acting at the three-day Ontario County Drama Festival held last week at Oshawa's Eastdale Collegiate. The play was directed by Mrs. Diane Lackie and included a cast of Carol Aird, Robert McLaurin and Sharon Lackie. Mr. Gordon McMaster, a native of this community and former employee of the Port Perry Star, returned to his residence in Marysville, Washington, USA after a brief visit with family and friends from this area. Mr. and Mrs. Wes Crosier of Sunderland were honored recently on the occasion of their 58th Wedding Anniversary. The couple dined with their family at the Rock Haven restaurant in Peterborough. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hall flew to Tampa, Florida, for a vacation which included a return trip through Virginia, Washington, and New York. 10 YEARS AGO Wednesday, April 21, 1982 Monday, April 19 will go down in history as the day the ice left Lake Scugog in 1982. The next production for the Borelians will be "Busybody", a delightful farce in the true British comical style. The Scugog Choral Society held its sixth annual spring production of choral music at Town Hall 1873. Large crowds attended the two-night program known as Music, Music, Music. Grace Hastings, Scugog Choral Society founder, directed the production. Claudia Little and Cheryl Linton were named as acting co- chairmen of the Scugog Block Parents Association. There are now about 200 Block Parent homes in Scugog Township. Area representatives are Jean Holtby in Prince Albert, Glenda Morden in Port Perry and Gail Malcolm in Blackstock. T & C LIMOUSINE SERVICE PORT PERRY PLAZA » 68 SCUGOG STREET DIVISION of THE BEST of THINGS FLORISTS Tough questions in tough times From Page 7 ple are interested in. I suggest they are more interested in the specifics and in knowing what your government has in mind. I believe the public is more inter- ested in content not method. You appear to be interested in our concerns, to the point that you will tell the treasurer of them. But I have to wonder if this is to change the guarded budget a mere two weeks prior to its expected arrival or to gather publicopinion in order to make it more palatable to the people who have become "squawkers by nature". Is this government sending out the scouts and market analysts to soften the market for a product they don't want and can't af- ford? Thirdly, you indicated that you are leading the way by freezing your own salaries. Does this include operating budgets, expense accounts and remunerations for positions of added responsibilities? Finally, in another article in the same edition of the same paper (also enclosed) you are quoted as saying, "To be honest, alot of promises were made dur- ing the election, but we didn't expect to get into power." You alluded that promises made during the election were not meant to be carried out. But were you not elected on the strength of those promises? If this is the case, can we afford to trust this government? I realize I have put forth some tough questions but these are tough times. We don't need symbolic inclusion in the pro- cess, we need a government that is honest and "upfront" with its people. If this country has come of age, surely its peo- ple have. If you want direction from the people then you had better let the people know where they are and where you want to take them and how you are going to get them there. If we are truly a grown-up people, let go of our hands, let us see the store and pick what we want. Through dialogue we may then see what we need. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Yours truly, Peter Fallaise Make a donation wear a carnation To the Editor: The annual Multiple Sclero- sis Carnation Campaign will take place in Durham on May 7, 8 and 9.
