"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Real Estate Section - Tuesday, April 21,1992 - 9 Basement It's hard to believe, but those two babies that we brought home from the hospital a week or so ago are about to turn 16. To celebrate, Kyle and Belinda had their first "mixed" party last night, but just as their guests started to arrive, their Great Aunt Hilda pulled up in a taxi. "Darlings," she said to the kids, "I've come to give you your presents!" Since sorting this out was Em's department, I grabbed something to read and retreated to the basement. The funny think was that what I had grabbed to read was a pamphlet from The Hydro that talked about "energy myths" - things some people do to save energy, but that don't actually work. For example, one n said he kept his freezer in an unheated garage so that it didn't have to work as hard in the summer. According to The Hydro, it's actually easier on the motor and compressor if the temperature is constant. Or how about turning off your electric water heater when you go away for the weekend? In fact, the heaters are well insulated and retain heat for a long time. You won't save money unless you turn off the water heater for more than five days. Another "energy myth" is thinking that you should keep your thermostat at the same level all winter, since changing it uses more energy. The truth is, if you lower the temperature when you go to bed and turn it up again in the morning, you'll likely save money and energy. Or how about opening the oven door after you're finished using it, to help heat up the house? Well, The Hydro had a couple of things to say about this one. First, it isn't safe an second, the heat will make its way into the house whether the door is open or not. In a few minutes I heard the front door open and close, and beetled upstairs. "It was simple," said Em. "I just told her that the twins' birthday is really tomorrow. Since she thought it was bad luck to give presents late, I figured she'd think the same thing about giving them early. She couldn't get in the taxi fast enough. This newspaper, in conjunction with Ontario Hydro, is bringing you Phil's Basement to help "bring home" ideas on how to save energy. To receive the brochure "How You Use Energy Wisely," call Ontario Hydro at 1-800-263-9000 and tell them Phil sent you. Weather great for Easte Hope everyone enjoyed the Easter weekend. The weather man certainly co-operated by warming things up a little, not before time, either. Happy birthday this week to Gary Sweetman, Barbara Short, Linda Buscher, Ruth Zo- litz, Sean Fisher and Muriel Berry. Congratulations to John and Joanne (Nobbs) Molenaar on the birth of their daughter, Megan Alissa, born April 11. Sincere sympathy of the com- munity is extended to the Rev- erend David Shepherd and fam- ily in the death of his father, Mr. Lawrence Shepherd on Good Friday in Burlington, Ontario. i a SEAGRAVE CHURCH- NEWS Easter lilies and hydrangeas were placed in the church on Sunday in memory of loved ones. The choir sang two beauti- ful anthems, "Everlasting Love" and "All in the April Eve- ning." Three Sunday School chil- dren, Sarah Anderson, Stepha- nie and Cheryl Bright lit the How you and your local community can help cope with unemployment There are many ways to help lessen the impact of being un- employed in Durham Region, according to the Children's Ser- vices Council (Durham). The organization offers the following tips on how unem- ployed individuals can help themselves. -If you are laid off, get all the facts about your lay-off from your employer and find out about other jobs that are available where you work now. -Pick up a free resource package, for unemployed people, from the John Howard Society. Volunteer your time and skills somewhere. It will make you feel much better, while receiving work experience, making contacts, while at the same time helping others and keeping busy. This must be done out of work hours, to still be eligible to collect Unemploment Insurance benefits. -Read the local newspaper for free or low-cost events in the area and exercise to reduce stress and keep a positive mind. Join a support group, or start one, for people who are jobless. Members can help one another with childcare, home repairs, income tax and odd jobs. By trading skills, there is no ex- change of money. -Young, unemployed people can use the Barbara Black Centre for Youth Resources, located in Pickering as a free space for unemployment programs. -Be good to yourself and your family, you are not to blame for losing your job as it happens for many reasons that noone has control over. Communities can help cope with large lay-offs. Some have tried the following ideas to cope with large lay-offs and plant closures and found they could more easily deal with the prob- lems of jobloss. -Schools could open their gyms outside of school hours, allow- ing unemployed workers and their families to use them free of charge. -Ice rinks, swimming pools and recreation centres could stay open longer hours. oo 'Employers could suggest re-training programs for laid-off workers and offer good severance packages. -Canada Employment and Immigration, Durham College, the Board of Education and other organizations could better ad- vertise their services for the jobless. Some organizations offer training and re-location programs when there are large lay- offs. Practical courses for unemployed adults could be set up. Some examples of such courses could be: how to buy healthy food at low cost, how to work with government to get more jobs for Durham Region, and how to prepare for the stress that you and your family will feel if you lose your job. -Governments need to do everything they can to create more jobs in Durham Region.
