The Award Winning Homes of Concerned about same things GTA mayors discuss problems Approximately 20 mayors from the Greater Toronto Area met in Mississauaga last week to discuss common concerns. The April 16 meeting was called by Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion. During the meeting a number of concerns were raised includ- ing competition, the economy, the Oak Ridges Moraine, eco- nomic development and the Se- well Report. Although it was a diverse meeting covering many topics, Scugog Mayor Howard Hall saysit reached one common con- sensus. No clear solution was reached, but a number of areas were touched upon in general terms. For example, the mayors agree that in order to compete with the Americans and im- prove the economy, Sunday shopping was needed. It was also suggested that all members of the GTA should aid in attracting industry to the area instead of competing against eachother. This meeting was the first in a series of similar round table discussions scheduled over the next year. Mayor Hall said a report will be prepared on the meeting and priorities will be outlined for fu- ture meetings. The next meet- ingis scheduled for mid-June. The Greater Toronto Area covers a wide area around Lake Ontario from Newcastle to Bur- lington and north to Lake Sim- coe. The area represents half the population of Ontario. Twenty of the 40 mayors from the GTA were present including three from Durham Region.
