The MoJacks needed the win to avoid elimina- see story for more details. Stayner loses first post season match ModJacks snap the Siskins' By Al Bailey It ain't over 'tilit's over! The Port Perry ModJacks proved that adage Sunday night. Down three games to nil in the all-Ontario Junior 'C' semi- final series and facing elimina- tion, the MoJacks reached down deep in their mettle and came up with a 6-3 victory over the Stayner Siskins in the Scugog Arena. It was the Siskins first loss in post-season play this year, after sweeping the playoffs in the Georgian Bay League, then beating the Orangeville Crush- ers four straight in the quarter- finals of the Ontario Hockey As- sociation playdowns. After last Friday's 8-2 drub- bing by the Siskins in Stayner, combined with 8-0 and 7-5 loss- es in games one and two, it ap- peared the MoJacks were ready to concede the series. NOT!!! Before Sunday night's match, MoJacks General Manager Murray Parliament was saying that "no matter what happens, we're proud of our players for what they've accomplished this season," referring to the team capturing the Central Ontario League championship, then knocking out the Ernestown Jets in the quarter-finals by four games to one. But obviously, the MoJacks were not ready to pack in the season. Not yet, anyway. And now Parliament, Coaches Ken Harman and Garnet Warriner, and Port Perry's loyal fans have one more reason to be proud of the team. Reversal Of Fortune The first period of Sunday night's game was a tight checking affair with few penal- ties being called. The only goal of the period came at the 17:29 mark of the frame with Port Perry on the power play. Mike Coulson finished off a neat pass- ing play from Brad Menzies and Clair Cornish to take a 1-0 lead into the dressing room. The MoJacks came out of the gate fired up in the second peri- od, and after just a minute of play, Trevor McIntyre, from Mark McKay and Cornish, gave Port Perry a two-goal advan- tage. Then a little more than three minutes later, Cornish and Scott Erickson team up to make it 3-0. The goal was the 20th of the playoffs for Cornish. Just when it was beginning to look like the MoJacks had learned their lesson about tak- ing unnecessary penalties, Coulson dumped Stayner net- minder Kevin Crotty during a scramble in front of the Siskins' goal, and after the whistle was blown, he cuffed James Posita- no on the helmet. Coulson was given a four- minute penalty -- two minutes for interference and two min- utes for roughing. That was a "No No" consider- ing the Siskins in the three pre vious games had made good on winning streak to stay alive about 50 per cent of their power- play opportunities. Stayner seized the opportuni- ty to get back into the game with a goal by Lou Bellwood be- fore the first penalty had ex- pired, and with some 50 seconds left in Coulson's second infrac- tion, Steve Walker narrowed the margin tojust one. But the MoJacks were clearly on a mission this night, and tak- ing advantage of a power-play opportunity themselves, Jim Turn to Page 29 Fo Clair Cornish Notched 20th playoff marker Sunday. Port Perry's Coldwell Banker Petites ended their ringette sea- son on a winning note by captur- ing the Central Region Champi- onship. : Playing their first game in a very cold Cannington arena the girls were hot, especially Jenni- fer Elliot and Janine Hammond who scored three goals each in a 9-3 triumph over the Bobcay- geon squad. Jennifer Donnelly was sharp as she spotted four assists and a goal. Port's girls knew that a real "team" effort would be needed against our next opponent Ajax, the only familiar team within the Central Region roundup. The Petite "Bs" responded with a 12-7 victory in a game that saw end-to-end excitement. Be- fore the Ajax team knew it, Ja- nine Hammond pounded four goals past a shaken Ajax goalie. Jennifer Elliot continued the barrage notching five goals. In this game, Diane Vanderligt led the assist parade with four. La- uren Christie dazzled the fans with a breakaway goal set up quickly by Jennifer Donnelly. Pam Hiltz continued her scor- ing streak with a goal and three assists. Port faced Warkworth in the next Central Region matchup. This eager team greeted us and surprised our girls with their hustle. Port Perry's Leanne Holt and Cathy Cooper set up Coldwell Banker Petites capture Central Ontario Regional Championships our sharpshooters and we held on for a 9-5 win. Expecting to play Ajax for the cup, Port was surprised to see Bobcaygeon arrive as our com- petition in the championship game. Bobcaygeon was anxious to bring home the gold! Once again, facing up to an important game our goalie Jennifer Ham- mond played tough. She faced Bobcaygeon's finest and helped to wear them down. Our defensive squads of Jan- na Senyk, Brooke Shanley, Jen- nifer Imrie and Lauren Christie frustrated Bobcaygeon's at- tempts at taking charge. In this game Lisa LeFort's aggressive- ness produced a penalty but showed the opposition that Port's girls were not to be de- nied. Every girl on the Port Pe- tite "B" team showed us their best stuff and came up with a 9- 3 victory. Janine Hammond led the squad in this her final Petite year. She deservingly received the most valuable player award. This was a great way to hang up the skates on a most reward- ing season. Thanks girls, had a ball! We reunite at the banquet, April 26 at 4 p.m. in Blackstock. P.S. Many thanks to the fami- lies in the Sunderland area who hosted this year's annual cham- pionship event for Central Re- gion. Silver medal winners XL Gas Bar Eaglettes soar at the Regionals The grande finale to the rin- gette season is the Central Re- gion Tournament. Having es- tablished themselves as league champions, The XL Gas Bar Ea- glettes were optimistic about their chances in this event. The girls faced a truncated round robin three games, six teams, in in which Port was against the two top seeds (Ajax - a "B" team all season and Whitby 1) and the bottom seed, Pickering. The opening opposition was Pickering, a good warmup for the girls who hadn't been on the ice for a week. Port dominated from the beginning. Melissa Hooker opened the scoring, her first of five goals. Julia Leaman and Stacey Cunningham picked up two goals each, both with one in each period. Leanne Davison rounded out the scoring. Assists were given to Leanne Layzell, Alaina Davis, Kristin Waller, Janna Ostafichuk, Miranda Burgess and Julia. The defence played an exceptional game. Only one goal was scored against Alicia Burgess, mid- way through the second period, who is still searching for the elusive first shutout, (Who said shutout between periods?) for a 10-1 victory. The second game was against the Whitby #1 team which was looking for revenge after the overtime loss to Port in the league championship. This be- came a must win game after Whitby 2 upset Whitby 1 in the opening round. Julia opened the when she received a pass from scoring an aggressive forechecking red stick, Sarah Verschuuren. Whitby struck back with two quick goals to take the lead. Me- lissa tied the score seconds later when she picked up a pass from Nicole Virtue. The period ended with Whitby picking up their third goal to take the lead. Me- lissa again tied the game when Miranda playingred stick inter- cepted a pass and moved the ring up quickly. Seconds later, Whitby responded by taking the lead again. The game of catch up was on again (as in the league champi- onship). Melissa, for the third time, tied the score when she completed an end-to-end three way passing play started by Mi- randa, centered by Alaina Da- vis. With 7:36 remaining the par- ents had lumps in their throats. After chances at both ends, Me- lissa dug the ring out with some aggressive forechecking. Stacey picked up the ring, sped in from the left boards at the extended play line and drilled a wrist shot that the Whitby goalie stopped. The rebound bounced out of the crease and lay still for what seemed to be forever. Stacey showing her determination ounced on the ring and drilled Pome the winner. The last 4:26 were spent watching the clock but excellent defense by Kathe- rine Cooke, Miranda, Sarah, Amy Weber, Janna and Kristin held Whitby at bay to hang onto the victory. Turnto Page 28
