Open water snowmobiling record more than 11 miles A couple of weeks ago on the cover of the March 31 edition, the Star ran a picture of a dar- ing snowmobiler tempting fate by driving his machine on open water. In the cutline underneath the photo, it was reported that the farthest anyone had ever trav- elled on a snowmobile on open water was 11 1/2miles. Well it has came to our atten- tion, courtesy of Seagrave resi- dent Jim Allen, that the world record is actually much longer. Mr. Allen, who attended the Snowmobile Show at the Mark- ham Fairgrounds a couple of years ago, said he saw a video of a man who snowmobiled on open water more than 60 miles in the middle of summer. The only thing stopping him from going farther was the fact that he ranoutofgas. Since it had been awhile since Mr. Allen saw the video, he sug- gested we research the subject to verify the information he gave us. So we called Marion Lee, Scugog Township's resi- dent snowmobiling expert. ~ Although Mrs. Lee saw the same video tape, she was unable toconfirm all of those details. She did, however, uncover an- other open water expedition. Apparently a fellow named Henry Bieda of Fenwick, Onta- rio, travelled 33 miles across Lake Ontario on a Ski-Doo in the summer of 1988. We thank Mrs. Lee and Mr. Allen for the interesting infor- mation.
