Gas Bar Eaglettes were up against the undefeated first place Whitby No. 1 squad in a one game winner take all for the league championship. In five previous outings against this team the XL Gas Bar squad was 0-4-1. This game promised to be a thriller. In the last league en- counter, a 6-5 loss, the Whitby coach declared that "he didn't want to play us anymore we were getting too good."' The stage was set! As visitors Port had the opening free pass. Miranda Burgess playing red stick (normally white) con- nected with Melissa Hooker and Port had the lead 17 seconds into the game. Whitby, a high scoring team, was not to be denied. They responded to tie the game 45 seconds later, then they took the lead. An exciting end-to-end match from the beginning Julia Leaman tied the game on an unassisted goal mid-way through the first period. Whitby took the lead again with 2:19 remaining in the first period and it was obvious that it was going to be an uphill struggle for the Eaglettes. Port fell behind 4-2 on the opening free pass play of the second period. Julia got Port close 26 seconds later when she completed a quick ring movement up ice started by Sarah Verschuuren to Leanne Layzell who fed Julia. Whitby's No. 9 broke loose (the on- ly time) from Miranda, who did an excellent job as the "shadow' to again make it a two goal deficit Port had to overcome. The 'cardiac kids" never do it the easy way! Julia moved the team back within one when she completed the natural hat trick when Miranda kept the ring from moving into Port's end. Leanne Layzell stole the ring after some aggressive forechecking and broke in from the boards and lifted the ring high, it dropped over the shoulder and rolled into the net and Port was within one again. Melissa drew Port even with an unassisted goal, then just 21 seconds later Port had the lead when Sarah intercepted the free pass and fed Nicole Virtue who drilled a wrist shot past the surprised Whitby goaltender. With only 5:04 to play it was nailbiting time. An attempted Port clearing pass was intercepted and with two minutes remaining the game was tied. Overtime looked like a real possibility for the second week in a row. Regular time ran out with Whitby breaking out of their zone SCUGOG ARENA has a RED HOT offer on ice. Prime Time ice available at 50", after Port had applied great pressure. In overtime Port began to dominate. Lightning almost struck for the second week in a row on the only venture Whitby had into Port's end. Alicia Burgess made a dramatic toe save when she kicked out her left leg to keep the game going. : Continued pressure in the Whitby end had Stacey Cunningham dig the ring out of the left corner, cut across in front of two defenders and lift a backhand behind a moving goalie to give the XL Gas Bar Eaglettes the league championship, the first Novice championship for Port Perry Ringette. The recent success (9-1-1) is the result of everyone doing their part rlayers not making the score sheet are Leanne Davison, Katherine Cooke, Kristin Waller, Janna Ostafichuk, Alaina Burger and Alaina Davis. These players are to be congratulated on the skating, checking, passing and effort they contributed helping the team to the 401 Championship. The next and last hurdle is the Central Region tournament where the Eaglettes have the toughest draw of the tournament facing the two top seeds. Get yourselves psych- ed girls, you have come a long way this year and your parents are look- ing forward to another heart- stopping weekend. _ our Cast off ¥ i Sra with U! Legion Pee Wees miss championship by one point Cross border shopping and hockey went hand in hand on the weekend of March 26-28 as theLegion Pee Wees went with their families to Buffalo for the Annual Pepsi Invitational Tournament. The moms headed for the shopping malls and the boys to the arena. The first game saw us up against a very good team from South Dayton, Ohio. Our first goal came just 17 seconds into the game when Rob Mur- phy got the puck past the goalie with assists to Daryl McEnaney and Jeff Clarke. South Dayton was quick to tie it two minutes later and there were no more goals until seven minutes into the third period when Tim Fitzpatrick blasted one in unassisted. With 13 sec- onds left, Matt Phillips put one in the open net assisted by Jeff. On Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. we met a team from Wilm- ington, Delaware and had an easy time of it, winning 8-1. Goals and assists went to Ke- vin Hobbs three ing 'Brad Morton one goal, Tim Fitzpa- trick two goals, Todd Parry one goal, one assist, Tom Chambers one goal, Mike Morden two as- sists, Jason Logan one assist, Rob Murphy two assists and Matt Phillips one assist. Our last game on Saturday was a slightly different story. We needed one point to go to the championship game, however, we could only manage to tie the third period and gain a half point. Our only goal was from Tom Chambers with the assist going to Chris Drury. Goaltending duties for all three games were split between Brian Bickmore and Luke Car- nochan. They both did an excel- lent job and if not for their tal- ents the results could have been much different. With all day Sunday free, the moms were able to boost the economy of Buffalo and finish off a fun-filled weekend. Certificates D. J.
