The trip is being sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion. A meeting has been called in Port Perry to sce whether there are enough youngsters interested in forming a juvenile lacrosse team and also if there are any adults willing to assist in the duties of coaching. Nick Rensink, Reach Township farmer, is very proud of his two young sons, Jan and Stephen, as they performed the duties of veterinarians during the birth of a Holstein calf at the farm. Early the same morning, Mr. Rensink had two other cows deliver two healthy calves to his already well-filled barn. 20 YEARS AGO Wednesday, March 29, 1972 Some 150 skaters will participate in the annual Ice Revue, staged by the Port Perry Figure Skating Club over the weekend. The cottages were not occupied during the winter months and there were no injuries. So it wasn't surprising that Cartwright Cen- tral Public School decided to use the day to kick off its Canada 125 celebrations. Students dressed in red and white and enjoyed special activities during the day. One of the activities was a Canadian trivia contest which was designed by a Grade 5 class. Questions were posted on a bulletin board. All of the answers could be found by reading essays written by the stu- dents on various historical events relevent to Canada. A winner, who will receive a chocolate prize, was to be selected yesterday. Alex McLaughlin, Miranda Wyllie and Sara Brown, all in Grade 5, are pictured with the entry box. Letters io the editor JULIA DEMPSEY! PORT PERRY STAR Reverse discrimination In effect To the Editor: Re: The Saturday Sun: Saturday, March 21, 1992 Metro councillor Bev Salmon came under fire yesterday for pro- posing Metro lay off white workers before minority staffers during the recession!!! Salmon said police in particular should abandon "a last in, first out,"' approach to layoffs! Metro chairman Alan Tonks said Salmon's suggestion to sidestep seniority "raises the spectra of reverse discrimination!" I want everybody to know I am not against minority workers who are doing a good job! I repeat I am not against all minority groups! I am against Bob Rae's orders to hire 50 per cent minority for all Ontario police forces! I am against Bob Rae's decision to order all Ontario corporations to hire more minorities! I know General Motors will do this without being told to do so! My nephew has tried to get hired on the Metro and Durham Police force, the G.M. Van Plant in Scar- borough and G.M. in Oshawa! He has been told he does not have a chance to be hired unless he belongs to a minority group! I am sure if a minority person is good enough they will be hired. Why should we lose our rights? You and I know this is not a phony issue, it's the truth we are losing our rights and our traditions! All we do is complain around the kitchen table and the pubs with our friends and relatives. I urge you to get in touch with your M.P.P. and complain to them about our situation! If you don't complain you will wonder what hit us one year down the road! I was told this week that the Human Rights Board has cancelled Grade 12 education to get hired in General Motors. Why? Because the minorities are not educated under our school system. The Human Rights Board wants all minorities to have paid time off for their religious days, this is right, this is normal but our plants and retail close for Good Friday and Easter Monday, Christmas and our new year celebrations! (their new year etc., etc., could be different than ours). Does this mean they get paid for our traditions plus their own time off? The Human Rights Board has no rights for whites! The alliance for employment equality is causing minorities to kill whites protection! Toronto's Metro council has declared March 21 the international day for the elimination of Racial Discrimination in Metro! If this let- THE ROYAL LIFE SAVING SOCIETY CANADA Ld t ano Ministry of " Tourism and -»» « Recreation ter causes people to call me a bigot and racist so be it! If this letter causes péople to call Bob Rae non dependable person (NDP) I hope it will! Blame the right people, what I write about in this letter is nothing but the truth! I urge you to call Gor- don Mills M.P.P. and complain! His number is 1-800-661-2433. Sincerely yours, Ron Colvin and Rob Long, Prince Albert, Ont. Thank you To the Editor: Family Respite Services recent- ly held a roller skating party for our volunteer and client families. It was a fun-filled evening with approx- imately 200 people of all ages atten- ding. The success was due in part to the generosity and co-operation of the following community minded people: Wheelies Family Roller Centre staff; Van Belle Floral & Plant Shoppes; Graham Ayers, Franchise of Pizza Pizza, Whitby and Shrine Clowns - Topper, Pickles and Flash. A sincere thanks to all. Sincerely, Mary L. Wilson, Co-ordinator of Volunteer Services, Durham Association for Family Respite Services Community support To the Editor: In addition to the article printed on Tuesday, March 17 il sh the Cartwright High School Skip-A-Thon for the Heart and Stroke Founda- tion, we would like to thank the Country Convenience Store for their donation of refreshments.
