"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 10, 1992 - 3 Ice Huts must be removed by March 15 Ice fishermen are remind- ed to remove their huts from Lake Scugog before mid- night, March 15 to avoid be- ing fined. Huts left on the lake after the March 15 deadline are subject to a fine under the Federal Fishing Act. While officials were pleased that there was very little problems with littering on the ice this year, several charges were laid under the Fisheries Act. These charges can include failure to present a fishing li- cense, and having too many lines and hooks as well as lit- tering. According to Jim Milford, spokesman for MNR, several charges were also laid under the Motorized Snow Vehicles Mr. Milford told the Star the Ministry had officers pa- trolling on Lake Scugog five days a week this winter. Every year the officials make routine visits to Lake Scugog to collect data and in- formation fromice fishermen on the species and measure- ments of fish caught. This information will con- tinue to be collected up until the March 15 deadline. A complete report on the win- ter's fishing on Lake Scugog will be complete in about two weeks time. Township snow removal bylaw winning in court It was 5-0 for the township in a recent match involying the snow removal issue. Over the winter a number of cars were ticketed and towed for not adhering to the township's snow removal bylaw which re- quires them to keep their vehi- cles off the streets during snow removal periods. Despite arti- cles in the newspaper as well as advertising, some refused to ac- knowledge the bylaw. These vehicles were subse- quently ticketed and towed. Five of the offenders decided to challenge this fine in Provin- cial Offences Court, and to date all five have lost, said Bill Hen- shall, bylaw enforcement offi- cer. He says two more have indi- cated that they will go to court over the issue as well. RELIANCE Pellet Stove Act. According to. Mayor Howard Hall, a cost-sharing agreement is being hammered out at the present time in which the Min- istry of the Environment will pay a sizeable portion of the cost. The Ministry of the Environ- ment has offered to pay 86 per cent of the cost of recycling the tires, and the cost of the trans- portation of the tires from an ap- proved depot. The ministry will not pay for the removal of the tires from the barn however. In return the township is re- "quired to take ownership of the tires and apply to the Ministry of the Environment for the grant. It is also responsible to \ . Although the agreement has been greeted enthusiastically by all parties, Mayor Hall said the township will not accept ownership of the tires. Despite the roadblock, all parties are still trying to reach an agreement. Gord Mills, Dur- ham East MPP, said he will meet with Environment Minis- ter Ruth Grier shortly "to dis- cuss alternatives." He said a caucus meeting was scheduled for March 10. "Something's got to be done," he said. "This irritative needs to be taken care of." Mr. Mills said he believes an agreement will be reached soon. He said he understands the township's reluctance to take ownership of the tires, as "it's nobody's problem." All parties are being very cau- tious in the handling of this af- 1 4 0)3¥) fair as they fear the actions that take place could be set a prece- dent for furtherincidents. The problem of the tires being illegally stored on the Island has been ongoing for more than a year. Despite various at- tempts the township has been unable to have the problem rem- edied. It had pressed formal charges against the lessee of the proper- ty, but he has since fled the area, leaving behind the tires. There are conflicting reports as to how many tires there actu- ally are. Figures range from 30,000 to 70,000 tires.
