a... "A Family Tradition for 125 Years" Recycling business By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Recycling in its truest form is "the way Ginter Baca describes the latest industry to open its doors in the Township of Scu- gog. Numina Recycling Inc., which moved into its complex on Reach Road in the fall, will be- gin operations in mid- March. The name Numina, which Mr. Baca selected for the compa- ny, is a deity of spirits in classi- cal mythology pertaining to the environment. He felt this name was apropos as his new venture also pertains to the environ- ment. Numina Recycling Inc. spe- cializes in the recycling of wood products, especially wooden shipping pallets. Many compa- nies use these pallets but are not able to dispose of them after use. Using a state-of-the-art ma- chine, driven by a computer sys- tem, Numina is able to recycle these wooden pallets and ""re- turn them to their natural state." The pallets are ground into wood shaving of three dif- ferent sizes -- 10 per cent fine, 80 per cent medium and 10 per cent coarse. Mr. Baca, president of Numi- na, says he has already found a market for the medium wood shavings. Itis hisidea to sell the shavings to farmers to be used as livestock bedding. He be- lieves that farms specializing in dairy and cattle will be able to use the product, which is quite clean. There is also a small market for the fine product as a storage liner for bricks, but he says there is not yet a market for the coarse product. Mr. Baca, a financier by pro- fession, decided to get into the recycling business a few years ago after realizing that there was a problem with scrap wood. He had heard of a recycling sys- tem and decided to invest in the process. He invested $1.3 million in the ATS system from TWR in Markham, Ontario and hired Greenstone Engineers to design the line. Total cost of the plant will be approximately $2.4 million. He has already been notified that the company qualifies for a grant from the Ministry of the Environment for 25 to 50 per cent of the start-up costs under the Waste Diversion Program. oN IN OR TONE TON GINTER BACA But funding has been slow in coming. Mr. Baca says this has delayed the start-up of the plant. The plant is approximately 4,800 square feet and features the complex ATS system. At the present there is only one ma- chine, but there are plans to in- stall an additional machine. The state-of-the-art machine has the ability to grind the wood into the finished product in a matter of minutes, removing the nails in the process. The end product is then stored in bags or in storage tanks outside. When the plant is operating at full capacity, Mr. Baca says it will be able to produce approxi- mately 12,000 to 20,000 tons of the product per year. Approxi- mately 50 pallets make one ton of the shavings. The beauty of the entire pro- cess, says Doug Mowat, opera- tions manager, is that it is "100 per cent recycling." Not only is the wood recycled, but the nails are used for scrap metals. He adds the company is also providing a viable alternative to companies who have had to find ways to dispose of the pallets thus far. Plans in the future call for an expansion of the system to in- clude soil treatments and dry wall recycling. Mr. Baca says the machine 18 also capable of handling medical wastes. The start-up of this plant in the north end of Port Perry means a shot in the arm to the economy of the Township of Scu- gog which was hurt by the clos- ing of Johnson Controls. Al- though it will be operating with Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. The Township of Scugog will also benefit from the spin offs this new industry will generate . Mr. Baca says the company has already injected approximately $175,000 into the local economy by using area contractors and local industries and estimates another $4 million will be spent in the next three years. The effects of Numina were felt early in its existence as it hired the five employees laid off after a previous wood recycling plant closed its doors in August. . The present site was chosen because itis closer to the end us- ers. Mr. Baca says Port Perry is in close proximity to the many farmers which he hopes will be interested in his product. Although the plans are right on schedule for the start-up in mid-March, Mr. Baca says it has been a long, tough haul. He has been frustrated by the de- lays in financing and the effects of the recession which he didn't expect would last this long. He says people are reluctant to fi- nance a new company right now. But despite the problems they have faced, Mr. Baca is con- fident he made the right deci- sion. "This is the right kind of busi- ness," he says. "We are making a positive product." FIC S. Y x EE = It wasn't Albertville, but it was just as exciting for the stu- dents at S. A. Cawker Public School. The school held its own Winter Olympics during the past two weeks. Students from 20 classrooms represented athletes from 20 countries and went head to head in events such as a science Olym- pics, math relay, and toboggan race.
