Game Three Napanee 5 - Port Perry 5 Sunday, Feb. 23 in Napanee On Sunday, Feb. 23 the Malmont Atom As travelled down the 401 to Napanee for game three of their quarter final series. With Port down two games to nothing their backs were against the wall. Looking at elimination it was do or die for Port. Port came into this game on a good note after just winning the consola- tion championship in their home tournament on Saturday. It was evident from the start of the game that the referees weren't going to do Port Perry any favors. The farther east you go to play hockey the more pesnie have read Don Cherry's 00 Sockem Hockey.' Napanee opened the scoring first when they scored at 12:15 of the first period on a breakaway. At 11:31 the Port Perry goalie gloved a hard shot and the officials said the glove with the puck in it crossed the goal line. The score was now 2-0 for Napanee. At 10:52 Justin Kowalczyk put a nice pass over to Dillan Weber who was deep in the Napanee zone and with a good move beat the Napanee goalie cleanly. The first period came to an end with Napanee ahead 2-1. The results of the competition are as follows: Pre-Juvenile A girls: Kristy Newbold, gold med- al. In the Juvenile A girls Pame- la Armstrong won the bronze The second period was much the same as the first with the play go- ing from end to end and the spec- tators sitting on the edge of their seats, much the same as one would do watching a tennis game. Both goalies were doing a good job in their respective nets. At 5:20 Napanee scored again to increase their lead to 3-1. At 4:34 Dillan Weber took the play into the Napanee zone back to the period to Justin Kowalczyk, in to Troy Camp- bell and "he buries it deep" in the Napanee goal to close the gap to 3-2. With 0:43 left on the clock Adam Jones fed Seth Gray a nice pass and "he scores!" "Don't go away folks, this things not over yet."' She's all tied up at three all. As the second period came to an end and the players go to the dress- ing room while they flood the ice it gave the spectators a chance to catch their breath. What a game! ! The third period took off the same as periods one and two, fast skating, hard shooting and rockem, sockem hockey Napanee style. At the mid- way of period three at 6:26 Napanee and in Juvenile B girls Alicia Sauder was seventh. In Juvenile B girls Kelli Na- din was fifth and Tasha Ste- phenson was sixth. In Pre-Novice B girls Jodi May won the silver, Lindsay Wilson the bronze and Melissa Meeking was fifth. ~ Atom As tie with Napanee took the lead again as they scored to make it 4-3. At 5:34 Adam Jones put one over to Danny Lyons and "in she goes"' to tie the game at four all. Twenty seconds later Adam Jones put it in front to Scott Jeffrey and - "say good night Ralph,' Port takes the lead 5-4. With the period winding down Napanee scored with 48 clicks left on the clock to send the score in- to overtime. Ten minutes was put on the clock and for 10 minutes Port was knocking on the door but the door wouldn't open. In overtime Port outshot Napanee 9-5. The over- time came to an end and the game came to an end with Port Perry 5 - Napanee 5. Shots on goal were Port Perry 47 - Napanee 45. Both goalies played well. Corey Branton played in goal for Port. The Port team is playing good solid playoff hockey. Coach Lee Wilbur has them working like a well oiled machine, united and well disciplin- ed. Every player is going full out. Good luck Port as the series comes back to Port on Friday at 8 p.m. for game four.
