Swamp and Blackstock win in playoff action Playoffs got underway this past weekend at Port Arena with Blackstock hosting Woody's in game one of the best of three se- ries. Tom Wotten, from Ben Short gave Blackstock a 1-0 lead at the end of the first. Ron Wagg from Steve Halkes and Ron Short made the score 2-0 and Bill Pratt from Ron Short (his third assist of the game) and Ron Wagg finished the scoring to make it a 3-0 Blackstock fi- nal. Rick McLean was strong in goal for Blackstock in recording the shutout. The second game pitted Mon- sma Electric against B & R/ Swampers. The two teams seemed content to wait for the other to make a mistake. With 1:19 remaining in the first, Monsma's Greg Gibson was awarded a penalty shot. He made no mistake as he beat Keith Tremblay low to the stick side to make it 1-0 Monsma. B & R came right back with 14 seconds left Mike Mole scored from Brian Pomeroy and Brian Robinson to tie it at 1 af- ter one. With both goalies mak- ing some key saves, and over time looming B & R got a turn over at centre with Willie Ed- wards passing to Steve Durham to convert a perfect two-on-one togive B& Ra 2-1 win. e Port ladies lost to the Misfits from Cannington 2-1 in overtime to even their best of three series 1-1. Joyce Parkin- son had the lone goal for Port. Next weekend there will be no games as the local teams compete in the Regionals in An- gus. Blackstock represents Port in the "Men's Elite" division while B & R/Swamp and Mon- sma are the "intermediate reps" Emmerson will be the interme- diate "tier 2" reps." Good luck to all teams in their quest for gold. PPHS Junior boys basketball team defeats Harwood to earn LOSSA berth The Port Perry High School Junior Boys basketball team has reached the LOSSA final for the second straight year de- feating Harwood 47-40. The Rebels, who have a 24-10 season record, have won two tournaments, reached a tournament final, and are undefeated in league and playoffs since a season opening loss to Denis O'Connorin November. Duane Empringham and Gary Norton led the scoring with 14 and 13 points respectively. Jeremy Hartin and John San- chez with six points each and Al Lazenby and Todd Smart with two points each played well in the game as they have all season at the guard and forward positions. Chad Venning with six points, Steve Parish with two points and Anthony Farrell led the team in rebounding. The Rebels will play in the LOSSA final this week and in the Durham/York Championships on Saturday, Mar. 7 at Port Perry High School. See your teams in action. Port Perry led 15-8 at the half with both teams, especially the Rebels, missing numerous scoring chances. It was obvious both teams were nervous. In the second half both teams' offence got into gear. The Rebels outscored Harwood 20 to 15 to take a 35-23 lead. The Port boys tried to maintain their lead, but Harwood kept cuttinginto it as the quarter progressed. Timely baskets by Duane Empringham, Gary Norton and Chad Venning stopped Harwood's threat resulting in the Rebel's victory. k Malmont Atom As win consolation tournament final Game One Stouffville 3 - Port Perry 2 Scoring for Port Perry was Adam Jones from Scott Jeffrey and Casey Van Schagen. Seth Gray scored assisted by Troy Campbell and Casey Van Schagen. Shots on goal - Port Perry 33 -- Stouffville 25. Playing in goal for Port Perry was Corey Branton. Game Three Consolation Championship Huntsville vs Port Perry With these two fine teams not be- ing strangers to each other the game got off to a quick start. Both teams were just flying. Both teams were matching each other stride for stride and both goalies at each end of the rink were doing a fine job to keep their team in the game and the offence off the scoreboard. With the opening period winding down Huntsville scored first at 6:25 to go ahead 1-0. Both teams had six shots, a goal but there wasn't anymore scoring in period one. The Malmont Farms Atom As started the second period fast when - Dillan Weber hit Seth-Gray with a good pass in the Huntsville zone and "helo dolly,"" Ports on the scoreboard to tie the game at one at the 7:01 mark. At 6:29 Casey Van Schagen hit Scott Jeffrey flying up the right board, into the Huntsville zone to Adam Zones and he tucked one under the sprawling goalie to Port Perry in front 2-1. Port and Huntsville were going at it head to head and Port firing lots of rubber at the Huntsville goalie. The second period ended 'with Port Perry out in front by a score of 2-1. Port outshot Huntsville in period two -- 16-5. Period three was another hard fought period with both teams hav- ing some good chances but the goalies were having a good day. Finally at 4:16 Huntsville scored to tie the game 2-2. There was no more scoring in the third period. With all the spectators on the edge of their seats the third came to an end and overtime was reality. Shots on goal in period three were Port Perry 10 - Huntsville 10. Period four was to be a five minute sudden death overtime. With the overtime period almost over and 6:8 seconds showing on the clock Dillan Weber hit Seth Gray going down the right side, into the Hunt- sville zone in on the goalie and "he scores!" "Yes, she's all over folks." Seth Gray scored to give Port a 3-2 win and the consolation champion- ship. Shots on goal for Port Perry 38 - Huntsville 23. Playing in goal for Port was Cor- ey Branton. Port Perry High School's curling team captured the Lake On- tario Secondary School Association (LOSSA) gold medal last week. Pictured are the members of the winning team.
