TI ES La 5 : Te oay hat necessity is the mother of invention, and it's true. When our twins were going through that "terrible two" stage, my wife Em and I found that it was easier to get them to do something if we made a game of it. This worked beautifully because at that age Kyle and Belinda competed fiercely over everything anyway. The things they used to battle about! If Kyle had it, Belinda wanted it and if Belinda had it, Kyle wanted it. Em headed off many battles by finding some sort of diversion for them that involved a contest. "Okay!" Em would say, "Let's see who can put these toys away the fastest!" Well, sir, Belinda and Kyle would put their heads down and heave those toys with such gusto that our cat Guildwood would flatten his ears and run for cover. It wasn't a perfect system, though. Sometimes | would walk through the door at night to find them both sitting there saying, "You missed one, Mommy!" at Em, who was crawling around on hands and knees picking up most of the toys herself. They learn fast. We recently had a recycling competition at my office - sort of an adult version of Em's "contests" with the kids. There were some people who hadn't caught on to the recycling thing yet, and this was the company's way of getting us to see how easy it was to do, | simple. The person who came up with the most recyclables in his or her tray at the end of the week won dinner for two at a local restaurant. The recycling competition reminded me of what we'd done to save energy around the house. We haven't had a contest {yet}, but our family has easily reduced the amount of electricity we use just by thinking about hoswwe use it. When you take a look around, there are lots of ways to save energy that require minimum effort, but still make a difference. Take your dishwasher, for example. Instead of washing half loads, you can save energy simply by waiting until the dishwasher is full before you run it. When you have easy-to-clean loads, use the shorter cle. And if you haven't got an energy-saver feature, turn if off at the end of the rinse cycle and open the door to let the dishes air-dry. Just doing that can save you 30 per cent of the total amount of energy you use each time you run the dishwasher. Now, that's quite a bit. But I must admit that I'm something of an expert at air- drying dishes: before we got a dishwasher, it was my favorite method of drying them!
