After a dismal financial year duri 1990, vice president Ken Carruthers announced the past year was a very Lagi one for the Chamber. He said, due to the efforts of the board of directors they were able to pay back $20,000 of the $33,000 borrowed in debentures from members a year earlier. In fact, Mr. Carruthers pro- jected that the Chamber of Commerce should be able to pay back the remaining deben- tures this year, three years ear- ~ lier than anticipated. The C of C general meeting was originally scheduled to take place Tuesday, Jan. 14, but winter's first bad snow- storm caused the meeting to be cancelled. _ Insurance Accepted Due to the change in date, only 65 people attended Thurs- day's general meeting he]d at the Blackstock Community Hall. President Peggy Finch wel- comed the members and intro- duced the head table which in- cluded past president Warren Strong and his wife Tracy; May- or Howard and Zula Hall, 1st vice president Ken Carruthers and director Tony Janssen. Mayor Hall brought greet- ings from the Township, thank- ing the directors for the work the Chamber had accomplished over the past 30 years. He said the Chamber of Com- merce had played an important part in the community and - while there are many good ser- vice clubs in the area, "the Chamber of Commerce has been the backbone of the busi- ness community." Peggy Finch, acting in her last capacity as president, stressed the importance of the Chamber to the business com- munity. "The Chamber of Commerce represents the entire township of Scugog, and that is why this meeting was moved out of Port Perry to Blackstock tonight," she said. During her address, Ms. Finch outlined some of the suc- cessful events which took place during the past year, such as Canada Day, Festival Days, a 36th Anniversary night held in September, Santa Claus Pa- rade and a co-operative Christ- mas shopping promotion with the B.A. In her closing remarks, Ms. Finch thanked vice president Ken Carruthers for stepping in for her when she was out of town and urged the member- ship to support the Chamber. "Support your Chamber of Commerce and we will all suc- ceed," she concluded. Presentations were made to four long-time supports of the Chamber of Commerce during the evening: President Peggy Finch presented plaques to past president Warren Strong of Framers Gallery; Ian Griffin of Lake Scugog Lumber for the companies years of support; the accounting firm of Shepherd and Powell for preparing the year end financial statements for the past 15 years; and Diane Knutson received a bouquet of flowers for the typing of min- utes. This was accepted by Tra- cy Strong as Mrs. Knutson was unable to attend. Elected to the Board of Direc- tors for a two-year term are the following: Ellen Lamb (Frank Real Estate), Kari Brignall (Children's Den), Heidi Dere- schewitz (Decorating Den), Wayne Wanamaker (North Port Woodworking), Tim Wansbo- rough (Tim's Home Decorating). Returning to the Board: Ken Carruthers (Country Style Do- nuts), Stuart Houthuys (Willy & Son Small Engines), Cathy Kroonenberg (Emiel's Place), Marion Lee (Port Perry Snow- mobile Club), Tony Janssen (Port Perry Printing), Bill Dow- son (Emmerson Insurance), and Ann Tielemans (Strobus). It is expected that Ken Car- ruthers will be elected presi- dent of the Chamber of Com- merce for 1992 at a directors meeting to be held this Thurs- day morning. IGA seeking outstanding local people Area residents who have made a difference in their communities are being recognized in a new awards program. The CKLY/IGA Hometown Proud Awards are designed to enable residents to show their Jide in three people from each IGA community. Radio station 910 CKLY is donating the on-air promos to encourage ple to go into participating IGAs and nominate those who make a 'positive contribution in any endeavor; or show the true poten- tial of the human spirit as friends, co-workers, teammates, neighbors, family members - just about anyone could be nominated.
