Watercolor paintings on display Karen Richardson credits her early years of exploring the Ot- tawa Valley as the influence be- hind her paintings. She grew up in the Ottawa Valley just outside of Algonquin Park where she spent many days exploring the pine forests, climbing huge rocks and play- ingin lakes and rivers. She said she still sees the influence of those daysin her paintings. "Natural Impressions," an ex- hibition and sale of realistic wa- tercolors and limited edition re- productions by Mrs. Richardson opened on Saturday at the Scu- gog Memorial Library. Mrs. Richardson used to draw every day as a child and enjoyed art classes in high school. She later attended Durham College as well as schools in Oshawa and Whitby. She stud- ied watercolor, stained glass, woodworking, chair canning, pottery, weaving, sewing and interior decorating at evening classes between 1977 and 1986. For 10 years she got away from fine art 'and her interest wasn't rekindled until she took an evening watercolor course about five years ago. Since this time she has painted a great deal, exclusively in watercolor. When she and her husband travel she takes along her came- ra and records the remarkable scenes along the way. Bed and Breakfast Inns that the couple have visited provide much of the inspiration for some of her fa- vorite watercolors. Shadows play an important role in her paintings of land- scape and architecture. By em- phasizing the lights and darks it strengthens the impact of the images. Mrs. Richardson has been in many exhibitions both as a solo attraction as well as being a part of group shows. She has been a part of Artfest '90 and '91 which are held in Port Perry. She has won awards for her paintings including the Samac Painter of the Year at the Camp Samac Art Festival in 1988, the Windfield Farm Award at the Camp Samac Art Festivals in each year from 1987-1990. She also placed first in water- color and an honorable mention in watercolor at the Watercolor Ladies Bible Class Results of the last euchre par- ty at the Community Centre are as follows: Ladies first prize went to Mary Borland, second to Margaret Watson. Men's first prize to Orvis Jamieson, second prize to Verna Draper. 50/50 draw won by Harold Dennis. Lone hands to Jean Hodgins, door prize winners Art Budd and Violet Lin- ton. Next euchre will be on January 16. Everyone welcome. Bernice Gardner recently visited with Mr. and Mrs. Rees Williamson of Whitby. Bill and Bernice Gardner and Jean, and Theo and Joan Knight attended the 50th wedding an- niversary for Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wilcock of Uxbridge on Saturday afternoon. The Eleanor Knight Group of the W.M.S. met at the home of Lois Daw last Tuesday afternoon. Eight ladies were present. Lois chaired the meeting and opened with a call to worship. Ray Deeth conducted the worship service. At Thy Feet our God and Father was recited. Ten rules for happier liv- ing was read by Ray. She also conducted an interesting Christmas Crossword.
