By Alex Tough Bob Anderson, former world champion, has recently returned to playing after a long time off with either injury or illness. At the 1992 Canadian Open championship he did not look too well even yet. However, he did enough to become the winner over Dennis Priestley, yet another English winner at the game. Anderson, a clinical finisher when within range, may well have Bantams move into first place Tht JDP Computer Minor Bantam Hurricanes have blown into first place after a pair of pe wins and a tie in recent game: On Wednesday October 21 they coasted to a 7-1 victory over Brampton at the Tonelli rink. Justin Davis opened scoring at 5:02 after he broke in on net with setups from Steve Roy and Peter Mashinter. Early in the second period Tom Baynton put the Halton team ahead by two goals, with the assist going to Doug Janjevich. Brampton responded with a goal seconds later. To start the third period Janjevich got a goal of his own after some neat ragging of the puck behind the net. Defenceman Matt Vervoorn helped out. Davis got his second on a power play a minute later off passes from Baynton and Mashinter. This trio combined again at 4:36 and 4:14 with Mashinter and Baynton respectively being the marksman. Roy capped the night’s goal pro- duction with a rebound off the sticks of Janjevich and Robert Haringa. Geoff Beauparlant was outstanding in goal again. Defencemen Richard Trotter and Jon Atley had particularly good hit- ting games. On Friday, the Halton squad met their arch rivals Burlington and set- tled for a 3-3 tie in a game they should have won. Again Davis opened the scoring in the second period, by flipping in a blue-line blast from Haringa. Baynton from Mashinter and Darryl VanLoosen made it 2-0 before Burlington came back with three goals in a row to go ahead. This woke up the Hurricanes and Baynton with his second off a power play evened the game with scant minutes to play. Mashinter and Haringa shared the assists. On the 24th, the Hurricanes played Barrie in Erin and won 6-1. Haringa with a booming blast from. the top of the circle scored the only 1st period goal with assists from Janjevich and Curtis Carr. Darin Finlayson kicked off the second period with a goal from Roy and Ryan Taylor. With seconds left, Baynton who has really found his scoring touch, took a pass from Finlayson and Roy and caught the top right corner. Mashinter on passes from Davis and Finlayson gave Halton a 4-0 lead. Haringa with his second of the night off his patented slapshot with the help from Roy and Baynton made it 5-0 before Barrie scored their lone goal. Baynton with his third consecutive two goal effort wrapped up the 6-1 victory. Carr and Mashinter assist- ed. The Hurricanes are winning with only one goalie Beauparlant, as Jeff Langille is out with an injury, as is speedy Mat Rimmer who is due back for their next game against Guelph. been given a verbal for his winning double during the tourney, for he toned down by the last couple of sets. Halton league results for last Monday (26th) are: - Legion #1 6- Copper Kettle #2 8; Copper Kettle #1 8-Legion #2 6; Legion #3 2- O’Toole’s 12; George #1 1-Legion #4 13; George #2 10- George #3 4; Timeout #1 8-George #1 6 and McGibbon 10-Timeout #2 4. Legion #3 were attempting to break into the top five and O’Toole’s were trying to stay in touch with the leaders - which seemed to set up a good match. One team would succeed or both would keep the match close. As it happened, O’Toole’s proved the stronger at the boards. The teams went to O’Toole’s, then three or four doubles and seven of eight singles to snuff out the challenge. Larry Hunt, singles, and Mike Pepper/Doug Hole in doubles the only winners for Legion. Marty Wheeler was involved in both sets losses on the O’Toole’s side. Legion #4 stay four points ahead of McGibbon and a further four points ahead of George #2 at the top of the stand- ings. Legion #2 move away from the bottom spot and leave George #3 and #4 in the last two places. Some notable wins and losses next. Jack Hamilton, making a return to play after a long spell away, is finding his touch just a little off although sure to return with more playing time. He lost to newcomer, impres- sive Neil Olmstead. Todd Axford defeated Keith Ewing. Andrew Wooley handed a loss to Terry Hancock, his team’s only point of the night. Glen Duke and Nick Hicks and Dean Raymer took out Roger Vanderham and Rich Rintjema in doubles. And, look at this one - Joyce Marrows and Alison Colter shat- tered Eddit Ebbinge and Stan Clarke in doubles. The girls are no mean players and can handle most players when on their game.
