The South Marysburgh Mirro Life i in the Past From the daily journals of Nelson Hicks' great grandfather of Vicki Emlaw, at Hix Holme, South Bay August, 1896 Aug. 1 The steamer Hero took an excursion down to the Thousand Islands. Archie, Mary Ellen and I went down Lib and Jake went. There were a very large crowd on. Archie stayed down to Kingston to Calvin Lowry's. Sunday Aug 2 I was down to Lib's Sarrah Eliza Rorke and Myrtle Spafford were there. Quartly meeting out to the Car- man Paw and Mary Ellen were out. Aug. 3 I helped Wesley Wattam thrash his Picton peas. Jake come up in the afternoon we drawed two loads of Bar- ley off from the flats. Aug 4 We helped Jake finish drawing in his rye out on Robert Metcalfe. Aug. 5 I started to Gang plough on the Flats in the lower field. It was very warm. Aug 6 I ganged on the flats Paw and Jake cut some of the Perfection peas with the mower. Aug 7 Paw reaped the Barley back. Jake come up to help cut peas. I finished Ganging the lower field. Aug 8 Paw and Maw and Ida went over to Picton. Paw took the Jem's peas over there where ten bus. And Maw's big toe has been very sore. She went to the Doctor and got half of the toe nail taken out. It was a very warm day. Mr. Alva Rose died at Six oclock. Aug. 9 Sunday I went up to the Valley to Mr. Minaker's and from there to Mr. Stephensois till after dinner it was a very warm day. Aug. 10 Mr. Alva Rose Funeral Serman was preached in the South Bay Church at half past ten oclock. He was then taken and burried to Picton in the Cemetery. Jake come up helped us draw in barley till noon then went down com- mence to reap his oats. Archie and I finished drawing in the Barley. Aug. 11 Paw and I pulled peas on the flats till noon. Archie started to gang the second field on the Flats. After Supper we drew in one load of perfection peas. Aug 12 It rained a little shower in the morning. Paw and I pulled peas till noon. After supper we drew in a load. Aug. 13 We finished pulling the perfections peas and drew them in two loads the makes four loads. After dinner we went down to Jakes helped him draw in his oats. Aug 14 It is very dry. Buckwheat is began to hurt very bad and the grass is drying up so that cows and horses have all ge can to to keep from starvation. I was down to Jakes helping him draw in the repers of Oats. Aug.15 Pa and Ma lib went over to Picton. They took over some butter it was selling from 20 cts to 25. I wish we would get a nice rain it would do so much good for the corn and apples potatoes and everything that needs rain to grow on. Aug 16 Sunday. We had a little shower of rain in the morn- ing. After it was over Mary Ellen and I went out to Annie Mauds. Aug. 17 I went and helped Lewis Farrington make a little dock for his Steam Yacht. Aug. 18 One of Jacob Hyatt baby died at eleven oclock. I went out and helped Nelse Ostrander draw in his oats. We had a little shower of rain. There has been a quit a change in the weather this week it has been quite cool. Aug. 19 Paw went down to Point Traverse to fixed the pic- nic grounds up a little and get the tables ready. I went down to Jakes and painted his cutter. Mr. Lighthall and wife came here. Aug 20 There was a Picnic down to Point Traverse for the preacher. They make Two hundred. It was a grand success there where over eight hundred people. Aug. 21 Paw and Maw went home with Mr. Lighthall they are entending to stay all night and go to Picton on Saturday. Aug. 22 Archie and I drew four loads of manure in the Gar- den. And ploughed the part where the potatoes were. Some time in the night it commence to rain and we had a nice rain. Aug 23 Sunday. Paw and Maw went out to Annie Maud's. We had a nice little shower of rain in the morning and then it cleared off and the wind blew quite hard most of the day. Aug. 24 T went down to Jakes to helped him pull his late peas. Archie ganged ploughed back. Aug. 25 I was down to Jake's we finished pulling his peas and drew them in and I finished painting up his cutter. Aug. 26 I went down to William Austin got 1145 lbs of Rye. Took it up to Albert Collins and got it ground for the Hogs Aug 27 Paw and I finished the Grainry off. Archie finished gang ploughing back. Jake went over to Picton after some lumber for Mr. Leroy Spafford. Aug. 28 Paw and I was working at the barn in the cellar part. Aug. 29 It has been quite cool for this last week and still very dry Paw and I made some stalls in the stable so as to do till we get flooring. Aug. 30 Sunday. Misses Lighthall and Miss Straw- bridge ,Delbbert Lighthall and Percy Strawbridge, Mr. Robert Dulmage and Wife were here visting about six Continued on page 19
