The South Marysburgh Mirror Letter to the Editor Contributor Lauds Organic Farming Even on Vancouver Island the Mirror has a reach! I just read the latest edition with renewed pleasure, thank you. The article by Vikki (http://www.smmirror.ca/ page8a.html) was delightful and the picture of the varied Hicks' connections in an earlier time, was refreshing. How young they look, and were . My memories of 1938 were in a different place but happily filled with sunshine and con- tent, especially as I had no doubts of a comfortable family life and good food and plenty of it. We all are very aware of the world conditions and even in Canada, much concerned at the difficulties faced by our family farms. Vikki's article listed her serious thoughts of the way she wants to live and why she is a market gardener , working the way the farms used to be, naturally, organically, maintaining a balance and pre- serving diversity. Last evening I was talking with a neighbour here, who runs the largest branch of our best super market chain, and his view is that within a very few years organic foods will predominate. The prices used to be much higher but already in Victoria, many prices are lower than the pesti- cide treated GMO foods. That may not be so in Ontario, yet, but thank good- ness for the Vikkis of this world. The few farmers in the County who are organic, or so inclined, still find it hard to prosper. That will probably change but our politicians must improve their lot, if they want our agricul- ture to continue in a healthy way. We all need to support the organic approach in every purchase we make, that is the surest way to prove what we want to eat. Healthy, normal food, grown without synthetic ingredients or artificial organisms . In the mean time, if Vikki and her friends need land with no pesticides or artificial fertilizers applied for 20 years past, come and see me at our farm when we figure the weather is better and we are back in Milford. All the best to South Marysburgh. Ann & Alan Dacombe * THE LAST WORD - Continued from page 20 nomic giants like China and India find ready markets for their products in OUR HOMES! Its producers need to identify new products and services with which we can compete! We live in a global economy, and whether it be furniture, food or our summer BBQ, we are becoming in- creasingly dependent on imports to satisfy the demand of households like yours and mine. Buy Canadian and be prepared to pay more for your wants and needs. Bill Yates Friend of the County.
