Life in the Past Excerpts from Nelson Hicks' journal at Hix Holme, South Bay September, 1900 Sat. 11 helped Levi Hicks thrash. Very warm. Got threw about five oclock then come home and went in swimming. Pa and Ma went up to Annie Mauds after milking. Mirt and I alone we just got to bed when Mary E and Emmet come down. Sun. 2 Mirt and I went out to Sunday school. Annie Maud, Nelse, Mary E, Emmet, Archie here all went home after tea. Pa and Ma Mirt and I went out to Carman. Mr. Foster preached for the first at the Carman. I think we will like him fine. Mon. 3 Pa and I cut the corn down here by the shore. After dinner we cleaned ont the sistern and about twe oclock we got a nice little shower of rain. Tue. 4 We rolled the rye ground on the flats. After dinner Pa and 1 bound the corn up down by the shore. And then Pa and Ma went up to Milford and intend to go out to Annie Mauds for some plums. Wed. 5 Did several things getting ready for the thrashing Machine. Mirt and Maw very busy in the house to. We were very much disappointed when the machine come along to learn they were going on down to the Point and so went and seen another machine to come. Thur. 6 We had a nice little shower of rain aloud in the morning. It cleared up about nine oclock. And I went up to help George Collier thrash the machine come down here. Fri. 7 Thrashed had a head wind which made it very dirty. Our crop is not very good but we had 350 bus all together. Archie and Johnie Thompson had a falling out last night and Archie has left him and is home now. Sat. 8 Pa and I drew in the straw and straten up the barn. Ma and Archie went over to Picton. After supper Mirt and I went down to Mr. Spafford stayed all night. Maud Dulmage went with us. Sun. 9 Mirt and I went down to John Dulmage. Ida, Dan, Levi, Alpina, Nora Orcear and Maud Dulmage were there we had a very nice time came up to the Carman at night heard a grand Serman given by Mr. Foster. Mon. 10 I helped John Dulmage thrash. Tues. 11 Archie and I cut the corn on the flats it was quite warm very dry like to see it rain for a few days. |< 2 Nelson's sons Wrexford and Royden cooling the horses down. Wed. 12 Archie and { bound up the corn on the flats and then we drew it off and stouted it up. Jake was down after fugo. Said that Fred is very sick had the Doctor for him. The Doctor has no hope of him we are very sorry for it will leave Jake with only Fugo that he can depend on. Archie went up with Jake. The Wind blew a gale all day don't think there will be many apples left on the trees. Thur. 13 I went up to Jakes very sorry to learn that old Fred was dead. Archie was up to Jakes we are all finished cutting Jakes corn. There was a lawn Social at Mr. Smiths home. Mirt Pa Ma and 1 were there it was a lovely night. Fri. 14 I helped West Wattam thrash got threw at noon then 1 went to cutting corn in the after noon. Mirt and I went to Leaque.
