All teachers said that the decision of whom to choose was difficult, as there were so many young people who exemplified sharing and fair play in all their actions. Municivally a ] While I normally create a column for évery other Mirror, the many developments in the last month, particularly relat- ing to the announcement of a 12.6% tax raise, have pushed my pen into action sooner. The Tax Increase Living as a single person on a pension income, I think I un- derstand the frustration many of you may be feeling. Eve- rything has gone up this year, eating into any "extras" we may have allowed ourselves. I cannot control the price of gas or food or hydro. I only have a say in controlling our tax increases at the municipal level. Staff and Council started the 2005 budget planning process last fall. Nor- mally it would be approved by late March of 2005. At that point we were dealing with a 3.4% budget increase - 3.2% of that related to fixed costs like fuel, hydro, salary incre- ments, insurance, etc. (Each 1% represents about $150,000.
