Then, a University in Canada accepted me with no probative exceptions, possibly because my parents were prepared to pay the first year tuition of $500 in cash and not in installments. Anything to make certain I was gone, they must have thought, and Canada was a long way away. . In the old days, wealthy families in England would encourage black sheep to emigrate to Canada. They would pay them a remittance as long as they stayed here. Thus I became a modern day remittance man. I was kind of upset, but left i -l Nn: ol : ; my dream job. Iwas discussing this with a friend one day. He finally said "since we are dis- cussing open mindedness and fairness is there not something positive to say about bigots?" After considerable thought 1 said "I suppose we do need bigots to point to when discussing tolerance and accep- tance of others and listening to various points of view. Someone has to set the horrible example of what big- otry is all about and about how not to behave."
