Life in the Past Excerpts from Nelson Hicks' journal at Hix Holme, South Bay February, 1899 Feb. 1 Archie and I drew some wood out of the swamp. There was a Tea meeting at the Union last night. Ida, Mary E, Stirling, Archie and I all went down with the sleigh the admission 15cts. and the proceeds $19.65 very good. Fri. 3 Snowed some today. We have got good sleigh- ing now and are having nice weather. Sun. 5 Quartley meeting at the Carman. It was a lovely day and the sleighing good. Emmit Wood was here. Mo. 6 Mr. Lighthall and Wife here came yesterday. Pa and Ma and Mr Lighthall's went up to Annie Mauds. Surprise party at Henry Wattams to night. Feb. 7 Ida and Dan went back to Jakes yesterday. 1 am : feeling pretty blue to day after the party last night. Pa went to Stone Mills with 11 bus of wheat. Wed. 8 We are having very nice weather for this last Mon. 13 Archie and I cut some wood in on the pile. Dan and Ida got home from Jakes to day. They left Jake's all quite smart Also leaving then with a little Birl baby. Jake is going to leave the place he is now and has rented the Jake Johnson farm up on Royal Street. Tu. 14 The weather is fine now and good sleighing think we are going to have a nice night for the concert at the Carman. Wed 15 A Concert at the Carman last night a large crowd attended all that could be seated comfortably proceeds $27.10. Pa and Ma went back to Jakes intend to stay for a week. Archie and I wnt up to Nelse Ostrander to cut wood up on Jen Wattams. week. Archie and I have been cutting wood to day. Nelse Ostrander and Family Practing at Wesley Wattams last night had a very nice time. Th. 9 A very sudden change in the weather. Extremely cold and blustry. Entend to practice at Mr. Sherriffs to night thinking that nobody will turnout. Fri. 10 George Palmateer here to day visting .Still it is very very cold. Archie and Mary Ellen went up to James Wattams to a party. Sat. 11 Some warmer this morning . There hasn't been much drive this last tow or three days. There wil be plenty of snow now for good Sleighing Syden Ryckman here to day and Emmit Wood. Entend to practice at Jacob Handmans to night. Feb. 12 Very nice weather now and the sleighing fair. I was'nt to meeting to day. Just as well John Duetta preached delivered his serman from Deut 27 Chap. Sat. 18 I took Jack over to Picton went on the Ice at the Station and went threw to the creek rained most of the way over finding the roads very good. Continued on page 19
