Life in the Past Excerpts from Nelson Hicks' journal at Hix Holme, South Bay January, 1898 Jan.1 It was quite cold. Jan.3 Archie and I drew up a couple loads of wood out of the sap bush Sun 9 It was a lovely day Arthur Farrington and 1, Myrtle Spafford and Effie Thompson were visting at Daniel Palmateer's. Jan 10 Dan and I went over to Picton . Dan got a new Robe. Pa and Ma are not home yet we can't think what is keeping them unless it is sickness. Jan 11 Archie and I cut the plum trees down on one side of the lane going down to the shore. Jan 12 It rained all day. We got a letter from Jakes saying that Jake and Paw started for Kingston last Sunday to see Calvin Lowry and that Paw and Maw will be home as soon as they get back. It was a very dark night and rainy also acompanyed with Thunder and Lightening which is a very unusal thing this time a year. It commenced about seven oclock and was still lightening at Eleven. Jan 13 Paw and Maw got home from Jake's. Paw and Jake were down to Kingston to see Calvin Lowry and back to Petworth to see Matilda Clark. Jan 14 It was quite warm and the snow is most all gone. I made a little jumper. Jan 17 Paw and Maw went up to Mrs. Norman Ostrander to help kill a bull. Ray ?, Leroy and Marsh Spafford cutting firewood Jan 4. Paw and I took a pig over to Picton. Sold it to Shanon for 4.6 per Ibs. it weighed 260. Then we went on to Bloomfield with wheat and got 4.5 1bs of flour. Jacob Hyatt and Wife were here visiting and Stratton Lowry and Wife were here visting stayed all night. Jan 5 Paw and I change the Gang-way doors and put them so they will open on the inside. Jan 6 Paw and Maw went over to Mr. Lighthall and are going down to Jakes before coming home. Delbert Lighthall and Mr. Strawbrigde were here visting. Jan 7 It has been a lovely day. Delbert and Perce Strawbridge went home. Jan 8 I made a little cupboard for Ma. Arthur Farrington came out here stayed all night. Jan 18 Paw and I took a load of hay over to Pic- ton for Gilbert and Lighthall it weighed 27,201bs@ $17.00 a ton. Jan 19 Archie went up to Ostrander's to a bea sawing wood.
