DOING WHAT IS RIGHT! They say there is nothing new under the sun. Dis- ....Read on! Recent events in Ottawa with vet another series of government scandals making Canada look like a banana re- public, caused me to reflect on the similarities I am finding (believe it or not) in a Bible study, centered in the book of Deuteronomy.('The second law') ~~ We are reading about Moses, the leader of the Israelite people, and one of the greatest leaders of all time, giving them a set of laws which they must obey to be successful in colonizing the new land of Canaan. In Ottawa, media exposures have resulted in the Premier of Canada, Mr. Paul Martin, being forced into laying down the law to his caucus and certain civil servants in govern- ment corporations. The 'history' which is given to us in the first five books of the Bible (known as the Pentateuch), is a remark- able tale of Creation, and the development of a race of peo- ple who have made their mark on the world in no uncertain way. The people who were to become known as the Israel- ites, emerged over several thousands of years from a no- madic existence, into a tribal way of life during which time they occupied territories in the Middle East. As they con- solidated these territories into twelve tribal regions, they came to be ruled through a series of Judges, and finally be- came a monarchy under King Saul. All these events hap- pened prior to a succession of foreign domination, culmi- nating in Roman rule. The 'snapshot' we are taking in our study, is of the beginnings; the time of transition, from forty years of desert wanderings as refugees from Egypt, led by Moses, to the conquering of their own land in Ca- rn ey re agree? | ENVIRONMENTAL SEPTIC DESIGN | §.gypt." It underlines their need to assimilate and hold closely to a set of rules for life that would enable them to grow strong and powerful, whilst respecting their fellow citizens and basic human rights. Here in Canada during the past few months, we have been watching the leader of the majority party in Federal Government, Mr. Paul Martin, assume su- preme power as he begins to impose his will on both the Liberal Party, and also the Nation. It has been an interest- ing transition that happens, among other things, to have corresponded with a report from the Auditor General con- demning fiscal irresponsibility by certain Government Cor- porations and departments, who ignored the rules and guidelines established for directing their activities. I think the attitude of Moses, if he was in a gener- ous mood that day, would have been to have said: "I told you s0." On the other hand Moses had been known to take unilateral and draconian action on those who broke the rules; so Ottawa, feel lucky that it is Mr. Paul Martin at the helm and not Moses. Being 'fired' is a bit different from the punishments meted out by Moses on those who broke the Law. I have drawn these two parallels because 1 wanted to show that there really is nothing new under the sun, and eventually, the truth will out; eventually, only right practice will succeed; eventually, in a democracy, and even in a dictatorship as history has shown, the people will turn on those who have let them down, often at a great price. In the case of Premier Martin, the price would be, to be ranked with the short lived conservative leadership of Ms. Kim Campbell and oblivion. So by my way of think- ing, Premier Martin has to get this crisis of patronage and fiscal fiascoes under control once and for all time. As a loyal Canadian, I ask him to turn to his Bible (there is simi- lar guidance provided in the sacred books of other relig- ions) and I direct his attention to some of the ways in which Moses was leading his people. ~ Moses told his people: "Remember that you were a slave in the land of cians would remember that in a previous life they were or- jdinary Canadians trusting in their government to do the iright thing, There is much to learn from the Laws that Moses brought to his people; laws on which we have based Continued on page 14
